alternate realities
03.23.22

This episode of alternate realities features highlights and references from the (alt)reality course designed by JAZSALYN and co-instructed with DeForrest Brown Jr. in the Design and Technology Program at Parsons, The New School.
The course (alt)reality is an extension of the alternate realities dublab series. (alt)reality is an exploration of techno origins and experimental sound. (alt)reality (esc)apes the constraints of the dance floor and reasserts sound as technology to alter the present and reimagine the future.
The course is an analysis of experimental sound practice at the intersection of race, gender, class, and technology. It references works by Juan Atkins, Flying Lotus, Jlin, Jace Clayton, John Akomfrah, black beyond, DeForrest Brown Jr. and more.
As an embodied practice of research, students created sound compositions in Abelton and sculpted 3D environments to develop alternate realities through sound. Their collective practice contributes to a virtual, immersive soundscape featured online at newart.city
* alternate realities is organized and mixed by black beyond creative, founding director JAZSALYN. The course (alt)reality is supported by Ableton, New Art City and dublab Radio.
alternate realities is a monthly segment hosted by black beyond
black beyond is a platform for experimental artists and activists to define alternate realities for Blackness. black beyond subverts space, allowing Black people and co-liberators to decolonize and re-indigenize social infrastructures. It interrogates understandings of Blackness outside the limitations imposed by the racist imaginary, through afro-pessimism, afro-nowism, and afro-futurism.
black beyond silences echo chambers and uplifts voices of the unheard. Allowing progressive topics which pertain to the ‘future’ to escape institutional corridors, becoming more accessible to the communities we intend to serve.
