NO ONE TURNED AWAY

05.16.24

NO ONE TURNED AWAY is a seasonal show that documents the human spirit of all ages DIY movement organizing, the interdependent arts spaces that we’ve called home, and our friends that steward these moments of collective self-determination. What urges us to devote our lives to this, which lessons have we hopefully learned along the way, and how can we pass down our loving labor to the coming generations of punks, lifers, and anarchic daydreamers? Let’s try and find out together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to episode one of NO ONE TURNED AWAY, a new seasonal radio show on dublab exploring the lore, legacies, and ontological mutiny of our interdependent and diy arts communities. Throughout this series we’ll be checking in with some of the wonderful humans that steward & setting the tone with us this afternoon is Faye Orlove.
I first met Faye as a green-haired punk wandering Boston, making art, starting a webzine out of my kitchen, and throwing very sick concerts. Since then she’s done far too much to quickly summarize, but a few key moments have included opening the non-profit community arts space Junior High, releasing two books with Don Giovanni Records (Irreversible Entanglements, Moor Mother, Screaming Females, Mitski, Waxahatchee, Lavender Country), directing and illustrating music videos for bands like Mitski & Downtown Boys, starting the webzine FvckTheMedia with Liz Pelly, designing the iconic book cover for Jennette McCurdy’s I’m Glad My Mom Died, and more recently is the co-founder of both the Young Professionals Creative Agency and her sweet baby Julian!
Sit with us as we discuss defunct DIY spaces, alt monthlies, and the labor + intention + methodologies that went into the formation of opening Junior High in 2015.
