dublab presents the Sounds of Now

Paul Zasky returns to the dublab airwaves with two special guests, Nicolai Beverungen and Emch.

In the first hour, Nicolai Beverungen from Europe’s Dub label Nr 1 Echo Beach will provide a special set!

For more than 30 years now, ECHO BEACH outta Hamburg Germany, has dedicated itself to the dissemination, maintenance and development of that exquisite secret science that has been called “Dub” since King Tubby’s or Lee Scratch Perry’s early days. A niche product in the highly competitive sound carrier market, but one that has been stimulating the market without competition since then. Nicolai Beverungen has given ECHO BEACH a personality and in doing so he represents a certain type of music that he believes in and for which he wants to inspire people.

He will present a special DUBLAB Mix, highlighting the best of the Echo Beach label, presenting Dub Classics & Future Dub in the mix. In Dub we trust.

In the second hour, it will be Paul’s pleasure to have Emch from Subatomic Sound System in the studio to do a dubwise DJ set.

For over a quarter century, Emch has been the producer, selector, and musician spearheading New York City’s live dub band Subatomic Sound System and the Subatomic Sound label, widely known for their decade plus tenure working with legendary reggae pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry (frequently appearing with the host of this radio show, Dubblestandart’s Paul Zasky, on bass at events like Coachella 2013 and New York City’s Summerstage 2009).

Emch, now residing part time in California, is known for his signature production style that balances vintage analogue sounds of 1970s Jamaican reggae with the low end of electronic bass music – captured on releases with Perry like “Black Ark Vampires” and the acclaimed “Super Ape Returns to Conquer”. In 2024, Subatomic Sound System & Screechy Dan continued those vibes on their “My Sound is Heavy” EP and will be appearing at a Lee Perry birthday celebration Thursday, March 13 at Brooklyn Bowl. Also in 2024, former Black Uhuru vocalist Mykal Rose, Subatomic Sound System, & UK singer Hollie Cook released “Rockin’ Like a Champion” which was hailed by BBC1xtra tastemaker David Rodigan as “absolutely brilliant”. They celebrated the release with a performance at Hollywood Bowl. The album was also a Record Store Day vinyl exclusive. Emch will be doing a handful of all vinyl DJ sets in California this month on high end, custom sound systems to celebrate that recent release and two decades of Subatomic vinyl releases: Saturday, Feb 15 for Faya Session at Long Beach Beer Lab (Long Beach, CA) and Friday Feb 21 at Sound by The Sea (Oceanside, CA).
