Cup of Storm | JIGNA
01.30.25

A four-chapter immersive film, Jigna joins dreams, spirits, and memories inspired by Les Guérillères by Monique Witting–a seminal feminist novel in which a lesbian society battles patriarchal order. The film reimagines and gives homage to Witting’s poetry through lucid soundscapes, myths, and movement. The experimental filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist Leah Solomon uses abstraction, oral histories, and material ecologies to create new sonic and visual landscapes.
On November 18th, 2024, JIGNA premiered at the REDCAT Theater, accompanied by Cup of Storm, a live musical performance of the film’s score. This performance, the result of a commissioned collaboration between Leah Solomon, pianist, poet, and vocalist Qur’an Shaheed, and bassist/composer Tate Egon Chavez, reimagined the score through a fusion of improvisation and classical composition. Incorporating the chromatic arpeggiations of Ethiopian composer Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, field recordings captured during filming in Ecuador, and evocative soundscapes, Cup of Storm emerged as a symphony of memory, text, and collective invention.
