Between South and North America, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, exists an isthmus made up of seven countries, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize, also known as Central America. Escuchar al Istmo, Listen to the Isthmus, focuses on the diverse musical and cultural landscape of Central America. Through music, vinyl record collections and special guests, the show explores cultural context, nostalgia and experiences of the diaspora. Tune in to hear the past and present sounds of the many cultures of Central America.

February’s Escuchar al Istmo highlights the contemporary music movement of Raspe, a new dancehall sound coming from Honduras and growing popularity throughout Central America and internationally. Said to have originated in the late 2000s, Raspe derives from the Jamaican diaspora in Central America and has become a new musical identity for many young Hondurans, especially for Black Hondurans who have pioneered this new sound. Thanks to Honduran legendary artists Papady and Gagoman, with early hits “Ya Acabaste” and “Rasputia (Sopa de Guinui)”, raspe music has taken off. Today, the movement includes several other artists, producers, and cultural promoters like KBP EL ALIEN, Jr Clark, El Dollar, Letra Musiq, Fresh Bodden, Lil Remo, La Toxica, Hondurola, Queen Kartel, Tj Chony, ALEMVN, Mount Fresh Musik, Jaso Beat, and many others. This mix includes raspe music with a few afrobeat tracks coming from the contemporary scene of Honduras and Guatemala.
