In the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn, you’ll find Michael Madrid—a kindred spirit on a quest to forge real connections through their art. Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Michael spent a decade soaking up the scene and creating a tight-knit community of artists. Their music blends experimental rock and orchestral collages with a sprinkle of indie influences, reminiscent of acts like This Heat and Jeff Buckley. Whether they’re strumming a heartfelt ballad or weaving intricate soundscapes, Michael’s goal is always the same: poetic vulnerability and a raw, unfiltered experience.
Currently drumming for the Brooklyn rock trio “Mope,” Michael also pours their passion into James World, an experiment in rock and performance art. Not one to be pinned down, they’ve also ventured into the world of hyperpop with their solo project, james/them, recently featured in a New York Fashion Week runway show, with the help of their James World cohorts. When you see Michael live, expect the unexpected—from real-time news updates to audacious “financial advisories,” all meant to jolt you into new ways of thinking, laughing, and sometimes crying.
But for Michael, it’s not just about the spectacle. It’s about striving for catharsis, for themselves and everyone present. Each performance is an opportunity for genuine human connection and a disruptive force for positive inward change.
When the pandemic hit, Michael took the challenge in stride. With the help of their James associates, they started a DIY TV network from their garage, offering a platform for local talents to shine, from cooking shows to art performances. And while they’ve dipped their toes in various professional waters—from their freelance videography in both music and fashion industries, to corporate social media and now metal fabrication—each experience has been a stepping stone, a chance to add more tools to their ever-growing artistic arsenal.
At the core of Michael’s art is an unwavering belief in the limitless potential of “making.” They’re always adapting, always evolving, guided by an open heart and an insatiable curiosity. And though they famously detest categories and sameness, one thing remains constant: Michael Madrid is someone who’s always pushing boundaries, forever committed to revealing the heart and soul of their ever-changing narrative.
