on last monday, july 1, 2024, a scorchingly hot day in eastern europe, i took an overnight train from kyiv, ukraine to warsaw, poland, with an early morning transfer in the border city of chelm, sharing a double bunk bed compartment with three other ukrainian women. for obvious reasons, there aren’t too many men taking trains out of ukraine right now. at around three or four in the morning, customs officers from both countries woke us up to check our passports. my male american passport elicited some interest from the officers and they asked me if i had any weapons, drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol. groggily, i said no and tried to go back to sleep. during the mostly sleepless night i found myself listening to an assortment of music in a psychedelic insomnia state including la monte young’s the well tuned piano (thanks j), neil young, grimes (visions was being played at a home gathering in kyiv earlier that week, and i was reminded of how much i liked listening to that album), coby sey, and more. there are certain memories that stick into my bodily fibers forever, and this train ride will be one of them. today’s show is an attempt to project forms of consciousness felt that night by simply playing some of the music that i listened to.
