The endlessly artistic and inventive Aska Matsumiya graced dublab with this delicate and beautiful performance. Aska, a classically trained pianist who calls L.A. her home, also performs with The Sads, Moonrats, and is a founding member of the 30-member L.A. Ladies Choir. Through her many diverse projects, Aska is consistently enriching the musical landscape of our fine city as well as the world. In this exclusive dublab “sprout session” you will find music that embraces like a warm hug and draws forth the gentle wonderment of child. Aska’s self-titled full-length record is slated for release this February.

By now you’ve probably heard the roaring buzz enveloping young L.A. beat-maker and song-smith Will Wiesenfeld, a.k.a. Baths. If not, you are in for an aquatic treat of epic proportions from this lad, who recently unleashed a massive wave of joyful melodies and sturdy, Low End Theory-approved beats into the hearts of music-lovers all across the land with his debut LP, Cerulean, on Anticon Records. Weisenfeld stopped by the dublab studio to radiate his essence in this dublab “sprout session” exclusively for your ears.

We challenge you to stand still while Buyepongo singes the air with sound waves that serenade like ripples of tropical heat.  Buyepongo is the fire we desire so gather around and let’s all warm up. Clap clap clap to the Cumbia rhythms that radiate from this circle and magnetize more to the core as the tempo intensifies. The sand sinks in with every stomped foot and shaken ass so shake some more and let’s send ourselves tumbling into the surf. With an accordion as our anchor we’ll find a sacred spot in the middle of the sea and start a new island based around original sound. Our roots will extend to the center of the Earth and this new territory will welcome all who seek awe through audio. Buyepongo have planted the first seed so get involved and let’s grow together.

I once knew these folks who were cool and classy and wouldn’t talk to me because they considered me cheap and crassy. Well, it’s true I have holes in my shoes and knots in my socks and cracks in my heels but that’s no reason to get down on a guy.

On the opposite end of the spectrum it’s always wonderful to meet folks who are ultra on top of their game but easy breezy and full of smiles. Quadron are in this wonderful category of casual masters of craft. So as you sit back and enjoy their dublab session of all original tunes please consider how wonderful the world would be if all were mellow majesty.

Sounds that force you to look up at the sky and close your eyes as the sonic waves enter your ears and melt the backs of your eyeballs. Frankly – you don’t need vision for this scenic soundscape. Simplicity and ambiance have never held each other so tightly until Summer Recreation Camp hooked them up on this blind date. Ethereal sounds that will pluck your heart strings and beat gently on your eardrums giving your senses a pleasant tickle… on par with a pill that would put your mind in a state of perpetual euphoria.

SFV Acid knows how to keep his computery roots well-nourished. His sub-bass is so heavy the ground shakes with earthquakes; his snare drums snap and slap you in the face. This cat bangs out New Age hair-salon chord progressions and jazzy bass riffs that keep you bound in a car seat in a high-speed chase on the 101. Fact: these sounds will warm you up like froyo on a dashboard in the Von’s parking lot.

Imagine escaping from a sarcophagus. You’re making your way out of a hidden tomb, and finally catching a glimpse of daylight gleaming through a crack in the wall. You’re pushing with all of your weight to move the door which has kept you hidden for thousands of years; your atrophied muscles aren’t much use. Your dusty lungs take in one last gaping breath, and you push one last push with all your might. The door moves just enough so that you can squeeze through. Now you’re fearing for your life because the sun is much brighter than you imagined. You quickly retreat back into your tomb and find an elevator door that reads “Hell.” You start your journey down the elevator shaft. You witness scenes of lifeless bodies floating in purgatory; breathless souls staring at you wide-eyed, sleepless, lifeless, and Godless. You see your destination as bats fly up at you like Mongolian warriors, shredding your mummified arms with their razor sharp wings. They pluck out your eyes and replace them with Christmas lights. Now put this image into sound. You have Italic Indian. Blowing our minds with sonic journeys, story-telling and scenery that our minds dare not wander on their own…

Asura is an ambassador from the universe of beautiful fuzz and melody. He has brought greetings from this land in the form of brilliant soundwaves. dublab curated a creative trio of live audio/video performances under Reclamation Project’s “Aquarium” installation at Sea and Space Explorations. dublab drone dreamers Golden Hits grasped the watery theme and performed beautiful sonic drips under a downpour of handmade rain. Enjoy the archive above and check out this rainy video of the performance created by Jimmy Tamborello of Golden Hits.

Julia Holter and Jesselisa Moretti paired up to perform at dublab’s “Shimmer” happening which occurred as part of Reclamation Project’s “Aquarium” installation. These ladies are a creative match made in the upper reaches of heaven which in this case we are convinced exists under the sparkling surface of the sea. This session will melt you into a puddle of pure light. Jesselisa’s visuals have a flowing, feminine vibe that are totally far out. When paired with Julia’s free floating music it’s mesmerizing magic. Keep your eyes open for Julia Holter’s full length album on Leaving Records.

matthewdavid’s sound aesthetic is an ever-evolving flow that never fails to keep bodies and minds buzzing with warmth. His live set as part of dublab’s “Shimmer” happening at Sea and Space was an exploration of deepest sea depths. In this case, the lower you dive the higher you get. Under Reclamation Project’s “Aquarium” installation matthewdavid created perfect submersion in unison with Diego Herrera’s water soaked projection sights. If you missed this dive in the moment don’t worry. Enjoy it not and sink to the sublime sounds.

Stellar Om Source flashed into the dublab universe on a wave of bright light. She came to unlock deep signals. With electric keys she translated cosmic codes from deep, unknown universes. Stellar Om Source channeled these dark matter messages and unfolded them into billion star brilliance. Tune into this transmission. These waves flow through you to find you.

Toro y Moi has the feeling of your favorite sweater tossed on as you rush excited from your home into a crisp winter adventure. The warmth of the cloth and million tiny sparks hug and dazzle you with electric comfort.

Scratch that…Toro y Moi is the sound of a choir of angels singing forms of cottony clouds into a sky scattered with floating bongo drums and brilliant dreams. You and those angels are all riding skateboards to a potluck hosted by a being of pure light down the block. While everyone else is outside getting drunk on the sky porch that being will show you an obscure film that will change your creative life forever.

Scratch that…Toro y Moi is the moment you realize that sitting outside the club listening to a Smiths tape in your car is one million times more joyful than being inside with the all the sweat and posturing. The two however need each other because this realization was only made possible by the boom of the bass through the brick wall. Its vibration spinning the wheels of your mind into motion and your body into bliss.

Final scratch…Toro y Moi is Chaz Bundick who is making warm and beautiful music in many forms and blessed dublab with this live set sure to fill your ears with happiness and be permanently filed onto the “classics” shelf of your heart.

L.A. based Cameron Stallones nee Sun Araw has been popping up all over dublab these days, so naturally the man eventually wound up in our studio for a far-out “sprout session.” This cool cat delivered on everything that the tuned-in and keen kids have come to expect from him: a sweltering riverboat cruise into waters of warmer dimensions. Not content to rest on his laurels even after ripping through arrays of mind-expanding explorations, this vigilant visionary blasted off in his futuristic cruiser to complete his next opus, the awesomely ambitious x2 LP “On Patrol,” available now on Not Not Fun.

Panda Paranoico is a group from Buenos Aires, Argentina, connected to organizations such as Fuga, and events like Panorama, happening in the hometown once a year. This is a great example of how the experimental music scene in Buenos Aires not only exists, but thrives. Sounds like these can be found there in a basement buried in the middle of San Telmo, or in some major institution’s art opening.

Sissy Spacek is a project of Corydon Ronnau and John Wiese in which the two noise champions form an infinitely changing sound blob of fine collaborators. When the mysterious and intentionally obscure Fol Chen materialized in the dublab studio and left behind nearly twenty minutes of skewed pop perfection, we didn’t ask any questions. We just sat back and reveled in the happy-making melodies, skewed lyrics, and supremely danceable songs that helped this band cruise onto the roster of Asthmatic Kitty and delight all those they’ve come into contact with. After our initial mesmerized moments, we devised an elaborate plan to capture the elusive Fol Chen in action. However, when we flashed our nets they were already gone. At least we’re left with these wonderful sound memories.

We love when our friend White Rainbow comes to town. He’s known for having the finest, most potent sound machines and is super generous with his product. dublab is celebrating 10 years of turning you on! Throughout this decade, we’ve been fortunate enough to have some of our favorite creative friends record live sets at our studio in Los Angeles. We’ve welcomed them with arms and ears wide open, and made sure we’re looking sharp for their arrival. We’ve strapped bass cabs to our backs, carried keytars up flights of stairs and lit countless sticks of incense to enable these spontaneous sounds.

In the summer of 2008 the band BOAT made the semi long trek down from Seattle to stop by dublab, and put on a show for us. Their set a very interactive one as they enlisted anyone who was sitting around the station that day to jump in with additional instruments, and backing vocals. Their energy was contagious, and it was hard not to be swept into participating in their fully unique musical world filled with quirky lyrics, and odd pop tricks.

What a treat for us, having musician/composer/pioneer Manuel Göttsching up to dublab soon after his first ever performance in Los Angeles. We totally geeked out about analog electronics, his forward-thinking uses of them in the legendary German experimental rock group Ashra Tempel in the 70′s, his experiences creating the E2-E4 piece in the early 80′s (which became a monumental inspiration in the development of late 80′s/early 90′s house music in the U.S.), the cryptic Cosmic Jokers project and so much more. He hasn’t stopped working either, moving into sound installations and film soundtracks. We knew he was a heavy dude but sheesh…

Mia Doi Todd performed an amazing dublab pop-up show in the tropical rainforest room at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Andres Renteria joined her on percussion amongst the vines and parrots for an incredibly special, intimate concert.
