Gregory meets Peanut Vendor (Inna Rubby Dubby Style)

08.19.10

This is a stoney, off-the-cuff thing mix. That said, Peanut Vendor was originally written in Cuba by Moises Simons in 1930 and titled “El Manisero”. It sold over a million pieces of sheet music, over a million 78rpm records and was incredibly popular in the U.S. during the 1940’s. There are hundreds of versions of Peanut Vendor, many corny, some not. The one heard at the beginning of this mix is by Nashville guitarist Chet Atkins. (it’s slowed down a lot here a la DJ Screw.) Here’s the thing: Peanut Vendor is the oldest rhythm being recycled in Jamaican music. Gregory Isaacs had the biggest hit with his 1982 boomshot “Top Ten”. In 2004, the rhythm re-emerged with a rash of releases and a dub of one of those versions is heard briefly after “Top Ten”. Enjoy, DH
