09:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Tradition and Transition is a six part radio program series exploring the voices of a new Israel. In each episode, your host, Alejandro Cohen and co-host Chris Kissel will explore the creative process, and the path of Israeli artists in discovering and finding their identity in a nation that is young yet holds ancient traditions as part of its heritage.
On episode four, we focus on the band The Apples. Starting in the year 2002 and continuing until now, The Apples have blazed a trail in Tel Aviv, mixing Israeli music samples with James Brown-style funk. We talked to one of the band’s leaders, Uri Wertheim — who also DJs and produces under the Mixmonster moniker — about the group’s origins, their unique place in the Tel Aviv scene, and about the necessity of connecting with his Israeli roots in finding his creative voice.
