Michael Barnes guest hosting — Heads Up

I spin at clubs, lounges, parties + on radio. From ’97 to ’05, I spent up to twelve hours a day pursuing obscure funk music, traveling to Brasil, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ghana, France, the UK, Mexico and Canada digging for records. I’m from the LBC, but professionally began in London in the ’70s: first as a staff writer on the NME music weekly, followed by a few years at Island Records. I worked with BOB MARLEY, BURNING SPEAR, TOOTS & THE MAYTALS, JIMMY CLIFF and produced the HEPTONES album “Night Food.” I moved back to L.A. after five years in London and went back with Island, eventually lasting 23 years. I produced THE PLIMSOULS, signed SUBLIME, put together 22 soundtrack albums, etc. I recently returned to music journalism and I’m the music supervisor on a Marley feature film, doing consulting work for iTunes and still producing music. I’m also still digging and share the wax by spinning out or creating mixes for DUBLAB.COM.
This week will be guest hosted by Michael Barnes:
Back in his hometown of Atlanta, Michael Barnes got his DJ-ing start back in the mid-1990s on WRAS 88.5, Album 88, as one of the original hosts of the deep funk program “Soul Kitchen” and a jazz show called “The Blue Note”. A move to the Bay Area found him spinning funky tunes as a frequent guest DJ for “Soulvation” at the Ruby Room in Oakland, in addition to a radio program on KALX Berkeley. After stints at KCRW and KPFK here in Los Angeles, Barnes runs the Melting Pot audioblog (meltingpotblog.com) and radio program, showcasing a mix of classic and modern sounds from all over the musical spectrum.
