dublab holds our friends at the Red Bull Music Academy in the highest regard. Since 1998, they have been criss-crossing the globe, bringing inspired young music makers together with sonic pioneers in the studio and lecture hall. Each night this energy is activated outside of the RBMA space with live performances in venues throughout the host city. For the 15th edition of the Red Bull Music Academy, they landed in New York City from April 28-May 31, 2013. dublab was on hand to channel the action from this inspiring musical epicenter, or as RBMA put it, “A place that’s equal parts science lab, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Kraftwerk’s home studio. Throw in a touch of Haight-Ashbury circa 1967, a sprinkle of Prince Jammy’s mixing board and Bob Moog’s synthesizer collection – all in a 22nd century remix – and you’re halfway there.”
dublab broadcast live from the RBMA NYC radio studio from May 6-10th. We showcased the exuberant creativity of the academy through dj sets and interviews with the international participants and team members. We proudly hosted Gerd Janson, Yannick Elverfeld, Todd Burns, Harald Bjork, Lazy Brow, Thundercat, Laraaji, James Pants, Octo Octa, Jacques Renault & Nik Mercer (Let’s Play House), Chairman Mao, Alitrec, Ale Hop, Jan Niklas Jansen, Ada Kaleh, Koreless, August Rosenbaum, Jimi Nxir, James Zoo & More. dublab’s very own Suzanne Kraft, who was one of the hand-selected RBMA participants, also made a few cameos on the mic. Enjoy this archive of sounds and insight from the inspired RBMA NYC music minds!
