Luis Alberto Spinetta passed away today.  I was fortunate to remix a song that he sings on called Tantra Sky.
For those unfamiliar with his work, google his name and immerse yourself in his universe.  The vast territory of his legacy is too extensive to cover in this post.  So all I can offer is a video and a song.

Carlos Niño is an artist who connects to cosmic channels of love energy. He picks up on the positive vibrations pulsed out by the universe and reflects them through his music. The resulting compositions sound as effortless as the midnight tide but are as immense as the moon itself, which pulls the waves in and out from the shore.  His album AQUARIUSSSSSSS will be released May 17th on Disques-Corde and Porter Records.  This collection is a series of songs recorded with his many meditative music friends.  Here are some words from one of his featured collaborators, Ueno from Tenniscoats…

“The way that Carlos compiles sounds together and processes them is strange and fascinating. My memory of playing guitar with Jesse on one of the songs is like a small fragment, and this album is like a kaleidoscope made up of these countless fragments. When you listen to this album, the concept of individual songs melts away, and you’re absorbed in listening to the whole album as one big piece of music. Every single sound you hear is beautiful and serene, and you can surrender yourself to the gentle flow of the album.”

Suzanne Ciani’s sound-waves slide from the deepest recesses of space to live in the now. Her synth based compositions have been given bright new life due to the gateway known as Finders Keepers. Her compositions range from the bleep bloop of vintage video game scores to the bliss of weightless ambient floaters. Enjoy this song “Second Breath” from the collection Lixiviation 1969-1985.

Did you know that Julia Holter is a star? We’re not saying she is a flossy glossy MTV star. She’s a star of truly creative and artistic music. She has devoted her musical moments to reaching beyond the veil of the visible and accessing truly unique elements. Her Live Recordings cassette release on NNA Tapes is a gem. We hope you enjoy this selection from the magnetic collection of inventively out-there pop and gauzy dream tones. While you’re not likely to see Julia’s name splashed across a billboard anytime soon you are likely to fall deeply in love with her music.

The dublab & Stones Throw families have lit candles and mingled to make a baby in the form of the “Sounds of Symmetry 7 inch Volume 1.”  This is your opportunity to hear what happens when these two creative organizations get together to procreate.  The first round of next generation sound gems come courtesy of Stones Throw stalwart James Pants and dublab dandy Daedelus.

For his role, James Pants tugs his tuxedo t-shirt on tightly to man the microphone as a cruise ship sinks into the deep sea. Once below the crew and passengers are treated to a million refracted stars shimmering above the sea surface while ocean floor lovers twirl their tentacles with gasps and moans to this remixed version of Daedelus’ “An Armada Approaches.”

The cover art for this creation was designed/silk-screened by Diego Herrera and the center label was made by Brandy Flower (HIT+RUN). We hope you enjoy this first installment of the “Sounds of Symmetry” series from your friends in forward thinking sound at dublab & Stones Throw.

Germany’s outer plane focused rhythm genius Burnt Friedman is back with a new album, “Bokoboko,” to be released February 3rd on Nonplace. This collection sees Burnt continuing his explorations into sound spaces created with open-ended intentions in mind. His adventurous approach ensures the music remains as light as air floating in limbo. The song we offer you today is a perfect example of the genre blur Burnt so brilliantly brings into being.

We are celebrating the first mid-week moment of 2012 by presenting you this “Wednesday Tone Poem” from Turn On The Sunlight. The duo of Carlos Niño & Jesse Peterson have been creating lush, impressionistic compositions for several years and now, the two have brought an extended family of friends into the fold to create a collection of songs recently released as “Remixes / Collaborations” by our favorite Japanese label Disques-Corde. The song we offer you today, “Wednesday Tone Poem,” features Koen Holtkamp of dublab’s favorite ambient duo Mountains. We hope this gorgeous music makes your Wednesday a wonderful one.

dublab & Creative Commons invite you to explore the wide possibilities of forever through INTO INFINITY. This art and music exhibition is built on audio loops and visual circles. On the sound side we invited a diverse spectrum of music makers from around the world to contribute 8-second loops with any ambience, rhythm, tonality or texture they desired. These audio loops along with the visual elements are available to the public for sharing, remixing and utilizing in any other creative, non-commercial manner.

We’re thrilled to unveil the first round of INTO INFINITY remixes. The songs below were created using the exhibition’s original 8-second audio loops as their sole sound sources. “I used pretty much all the samples available, nothing else. I used a max patch I did that allows me to have 8 streams of samples simultaneously which I can transform on the fly with various parameters. I thought that If I used them all this way I could deal with the mass of samples instead of just picking here and there. They are all great and together, they sound pretty good to me. Ciao.”

The compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones is a collection of underground music from the Saharan region which circulated almost exclusively from cellphone to cellphone via bluetooth bumps. I originally came across the digital archives of the compilation by stumbling across its Kickstarter campaign which was organized to raise funds in order to press the songs onto vinyl. I was fascinated by the idea of a musical subculture circulating in such a grass(sand)roots manner through an arid region. This is nomadic music of the most mysterious sort. I highly urge you to seek out the original cassette from Mississippi Records or as digital downloads: Volume 1 / Volume 2.

Now the folks at Boomarmnation have spear-headed a remix project called Music FOR Saharan Cellphones. dublab’s own Matthewdavid has created a stunning remix called “Stealing Sahara.” It’s a dirty south meets sand dune jam with a soft edge full of light snaking closer to distant dreams. We hope this song ends up back on a desert cellphone someday.

This is the explanation offered up by Porter Records for the movement of Trayer’s new album Afterlife An Abandoned Theme Park which includes “Dissolvi” the song we are offering to you…

“Part I, Dar Pomorza (tracks 1-8), the name of a ship found in a deserted scale-model-China theme park, merges primarily heavy, complex electronics with moaning stringed and wind instruments to show a wartime America through the eyes of Trayer’s deceased grandfather, a WWII veteran, and the glory that awaits him after death in battle. The turning point of Dar Pomorza is a recording of his grandfather presented as dying in his battlefield dream, underneath a reality of senility and pharmaceuticals, hearing his funeral elegy through his coffin before his ascension.”

While we wouldn’t have been able to guess the concepts that went into the creation of this composition we will wholeheartedly stand in astonishment of its multi-layered outcome. Yay for Porter! Keep putting these complex gems into the world.

On March 11, 2011, the world witnessed a magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit the Tohoku region of Japan, resulting in a massive tsunami that swallowed whole towns , killed thousands, and destroyed nuclear reactors leading to widespread radiation leakage. The death toll has surpassed 10,000, over 17,000 are missing, and nearly 300,000 people are in temporary shelters. This news was quickly forgotten around the world, but it is said that it will take decades to restore the region.

The “LA♥JPN♥LA” compilation is a collection of exclusive tracks from artists in Los Angeles and Japan showing their solidarity in supporting the earthquake victims of Japan.

Curated by journalist and DJ Hashim B., Vol. 1 of the series features rising stars from the Low End Theory and L.A. beat scene such as Sweatson Klank (formerly Take), Mike Gao, Co.fee, Ras G, and Samiyam, as well as the new generation of Japanese beatmakers influenced by the L.A. scene such as Emufucka, fitz ambro$e, Bun, MONO X MONKEY, ichiro_, and a.z.

Mellower tracks contributed by Mitsu the Beats of Tokyo’s Jazzy Sport, 80′s electro-funk revivalist and Stones Throw artist Dam-Funk, and Japanese producers such as Inner Science, Chikaramanga(TRES Records), Rebel Musical, Shingo Suzuki, and Coffee & Cigarettes Band, show the diversity of the beat movement. Indie rockers Free Moral Agents contributed a fierce and emotional rendition of “IOLITE” recorded at Low End Theory. Kutmah features MC Dakim on the avant-rap track “It Started In The Heart”, and Low End Theory resident MC Nocando created “West Side Rentals” produced by DJ Nobody in dedication to the people of Japan.

Acoustic and ambient tones from artists such as Miguel Atwood-Ferguson & Carlos Nino, Golden HIts, Gaby Hernandez, and Turn On The Sunlight provide a sonic healing aspect to the collection.

Though the compilation’s focus is to offer longterm support to earthquake victims in Japan, it is also a means of introducing new talent from L.A. and Japan, and shedding light on the cross-cultural exchange that is happening between the two regions.

Vol. 2 which is set to be released in late August, will feature heavier beats and experimental rap from up and coming artists in L.A. and Japan, while Vol. 3 which will be released in September will focus on leftfield artists from the respective scenes.

All proceeds of the compilation series will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross and Civic Force to help those affected by the Tohoku Earthquake.

In late 2010 we had the great fortune to share a bill with Rei Harakami at Tokyo’s incredible club Unit. His set was so beautiful. Each note was pristinely crafted and sounded like rain drops rippling into a black hole. This morning we received the sad news that Rei passed away suddenly at the age of 40. We’re so saddened to hear of his passing and wish his family and friends comfort as they’re dealing with the loss. We’d like to share the song “After Joy” with you from Rei’s album Lust and a video for Yanokami’s (Akiko Yano & Rei Harakami) song “News.”

This Zackey Force Funk and Kutmah collaboration sounds like the result of glove box pro-creation. It’s what happens when you cut your El Camino quick around a curb. Your tires curve and melt down leaving your black tag on road. As the rubber fumes up your tapes shift and crash in the glove box. An Egyptian Lover cassette topples into a Lowrider Bass Boom collection which is sent smashing into a tape of Zapp and Roger covers recorded by a monk living in a crystal pyramid deep in the desert.

The Sun is just starting to sparkle over the horizon. Banana trees sway on the banks of the river and all is peaceful as the current carries us onward. We float downstream with the morning mist swirling the bow. Faint incense hangs in the air as we pass riverside temples and morning monks in saffron robes. Slowly we approach other bobbing boats and soon we are in the midst of the morning market. We float, starboard side gently kissing the worn wood of the pineapple boat’s port, and buy a fruit heavy with sweet juice. We paddle a few strokes and are soon upon a ship serving steaming bowls of pho. This soup is savory and vibrant with lime. Our stomachs warm and tongues tingle. The boat rises with the waves of a passing dragon fruit ship. We hail it to buy a bundle of exotic pink treasures. The morning carries us through the market and soon we drift to our next adventure with happy bellies and wide alive minds.

Carlos Niño along with his friend Jesse Peterson (together they are Turn on the Sunlight) have crafted a song that perfectly reflects the beauty of a Vietnamese floating boat market. Their folk-infused creation conjures Mekong River magic with its rippling melodies and majestic swells. Enjoy this beautiful song and close your eyes for a brief audio vacation to Vietnam.

Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s greatest glory. It is the apex of the classical Khmer age. The temple shines in symmetry and grandeur under the wide Cambodian sky. A broad moat has helped keep its expansive sprawl safe for over eight centuries but this physical barrier is not its sole key to strength. When Suryavarman II constructed Angkor Wat he did so with faith infused in every inch. Into the walls, pillars and gates his craftspeople carved deities to protect against demons and invaders. These spirits of stone were mystic guardians. There are powerful spells still today and one such charm is before you now. Dntel has created a new talisman to keep towers from tumbling. This song reflects from the walls of Angkor Wat and casts a spell that will keep its majesty intact for the far future.

Cambodia is filled with millions of unexploded land mines. They scatter rice paddies and hills, waiting motionless for one wrong step. These artifacts of anger have claimed the limbs of too many Cambodians. Some of these victims have found a musical aid for recovery. They form bands to perform traditional Khmer classical music for tourists visiting the temples of Angkor. Their songs will never repair their scars but they put food in their mouths, dignity in their hearts and beauty to the ears of passerby. As I walked under a jungle canopy headed to explore an ancient temple I stopped to record the performance of one such band. Once home I played back snippets of this field recording in a live improv sound session with my family of fellow dublab drone dreamers, Golden Hits. – frosty

Put on some headphones to hear this cut-up. Preferably some headphones attached to a knock-off Walkman with its Sony sticker peeling away in the hot Sun. Daedelus embraced the crackle and fuzz of Cambodian 1960′s rock & pop cassettes to create this buoyant remix. As his slithering synth waves saunter on you can hear scattered magnetic fragments floating from every corner of your headphones. This rhythmic pattern is one of multiple flashes through time. Daedelus ping-pongs between the past in which these Cambodian jams ruled the nation and the present in which the original songs are golden ghosts, audible only to those lucky enough for an encounter. His “broken radio bliss” remix is full of serious wow and flutter. Close your eyes and cruise the busy Cambodian streets with the radio turned up and Daedelus as your guide.

We hope you enjoy Teebs’ highly reflective tune “Personal Winter.” This beautiful song is an accompaniment to the Japanese installment of dublab’s “Field Reports” series. Here are some thoughts from Teebs about his tune.

“Being in Japan was such an adventure. I spent a month there in November 2009 and the whole time I was bouncing around with different groups of friends and musicians. It was beautiful. The weather was just starting to get cold out there, but the sun was still out every morning around 8am. My host went to work pretty early so every few days after he had left I would take time to walk the streets of his area. I had never eaten so well or felt so at peace with a place before. When I came home I made ‘Personal Winter’ and instantly got sucked back into those early mornings…really missing the hell out of that place…” – Teebs

One of dublab’s dearest friends and closest colleagues is Mia Doi Todd. We are huge fans of her soulful, transcendent music. Each album she creates fascinates us and finds a place in our permanent rotation. Mia has a brand new album, Cosmic Ocean Ship, to be released on May 17th. It was produced by Jonathan Wilson and features the expert playing of our pals Gabe Noel and Andres Renteria. The record is highly inspired by Mia’s recent travels in Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, France, and India. It has an expansive, ecstatic feeling that embraces the Earth but radiates universal. The song we’re sharing with you today, “Summer Lover,” is an optimistic ballad to the wonders of warm romance and sunny exploration. We hope you enjoy the radiance.

Peel back a layer of smog from the LA sky and fold yourself into the blanket of haze. The golden half-light catches glimmers that pass by most eyes. Up here, there are treasures for those who tune in. Matthewdavid operates In this magnetic cocoon, unspooling magic radiance. His music reflects beautiful, fleeting moments and magnifies them. Matthewdavid’s compositions float like crackling clouds, antenna amplifying the dreams of the city below.

Matthewdavid is a man who builds with warm tones. He travels new paths gathering sounds to enhance the intricate dimensions of his creations. It was this hunt for inspired trails and blazing progress that pulled him to California. Matthewdavid made the move from southern states and was immediately embraced by the Los Angeles community. A willowy figure with wide smiles, his gentle presence and generous talents made him a welcome addition to internationally applauded LA creative circles: dublab, Poo-Bah, Low End Theory and Brainfeeder. Constant collaboration with these collectives helped inspire Matthewdavid to a build a platform of his own. His Leaving Records label has an ear to the next and an eye on the original. Through all these outlets Matthewdavid is dedicated to sharing elevated sounds and visions.

The songs unveiled on Outmind are destined for infinite replay. Light, gauzy moments blend with those densely layered. The biggest swing gives way to the slowest sway. These are classic jams obscured in fuzz and fog. Nostalgic jeeps bump invisibly to thumping bass. Outmind was lovingly crafted and resonates with Matthewdavid’s heartfelt glow. His music’s mysterious simplicity sparks senses. These songs come from far out to resonate within. Rotate your dial to a space between frequencies. Catch these ghost channels of golden pop. Outmind blends familiar rhythms with those lost long ago and others yet to come.

Matthewdavid’s live performances are akin to watching a sorcerer conjure spirits from the deep. He pulls tones like artifacts from an astral trail that ebbs and flows with fresh discoveries. Along the way Matthewdavid collects exotic sound figures: spiraling amethyst cones and wild flowering buds. He treats each found sound like a bright fiber to be weaved into new waveforms. Outmind pulsates with this sense of constant discovery. It is a mosaic sparkling with mystic, radiant matter.

As you listen to Outmind set your ears to slow dissolve. Let yourself be wrapped in warmth and levitate skyward to an elegant high. This is the place Matthewdavid resides and if you want to get into the mindset you must get far far out out.

Elephant Pixel, aka Dilo has been making music for quite some time now. He works on many projects besides Elephant Pixel. He’s also part of Monotax and runs the exquisite Igloo label. Elephant Pixel is now back with a new record “Ave Glitcha”, here we present you a song from that record called Run Wild

Holger Hiller and Thomas Fehlmann rode on the tip of the surfboard hanging ten on the crest of the Neu Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) movement that arose in the early 1980′s. The two were founding members of the legendary NDW band Palais Schaumburg who made distinctly vibrant post punk that continues to electrify eardrums decades later. In 1981 the two musicians looked back from their perspective at the bleeding edge of innovation and referenced an earlier influential figure of German music, Paul Hindemith. In 1930 the composer had written a sound play for school orchestras called “Wir Bauen Eine Stadt” (We build a Town) in which the children steered society and the adults took backseat. Well, in 1981, it was Hiller and Fehlmann who were building the new city of sound so they recorded their own, true to score rendition of Hindemith’s piece, swapping out the orchestra for synthesizers and drum machines. The resulting music has an innocent simplicity wrapped infuturistic sensibility. The album was released originally on cassette by the awesome Ata Tak label and now has thankfully been revived for all to enjoy in vinyl and digital form by Felix Kubin’s incredible Gagarin Records. Hiller and Fehlmann took it steps further and built their own NEW town with Palais Schaumburg. You can hear them in action in this video from 1981. Be patient because the good stuff starts 21 seconds in.

Bell Gardens is Kenneth James Gibson (aka Eight Frozen Modules, [a]pendics.shuffle) and Brian McBride (Stars of the Lid). While each member has been known to shuffle in the field of electronic experiments or ambient reveries (respectively), Bell Gardens finds this duo landing steadfastly in the realm of astute pop balladry. Bringing Kranky Records’ Loscil into the (re)mix conjures delightfully precipitous results. Once you’ve fallen in love with this remix we highly urge you to dive into Bell Gardens’ album “Hangups Need Company.” – written by Al Heath

I make music as Dntel, my last few releases have come out on Sub Pop. I’ve loved Enya since I was a teenager and I just finished this mini-album of remixes I did this past fall after a marathon revisiting of her records. I’m really proud of it, but unfortunately I couldn’t figure out a way to give it a legitimate release. I felt like if I tried to get it to her through any of the usual channels it would probably get shut down before it even made it to her ears. Hopefully nobody will mind it floating around, it was made with love and no money will be made off of it. I hope you enjoy it!! – Jimmy Tamborello

Jeans Wilder has made a futuristic oldies gem to score yesterday’s dreams. When the doo-woppers of the 1950′s strapped on their guitars and primped up their pompadours they might have held a Utopian ideal in mind. That image could have been one of sun-splashed California beaches under the warm Sun of an infinity sky. From the blue heavens of this dream one could pluck songs or images to suit any mood at any moment or on a whim they could call long lost lovers and those soon to be by merely cupping their palms to their ears. This dream of instant, invisible information has come true and Jeans has created a ballad suiting the beauty of this potential.
