Tomas Barfod is a man of exquisite taste – his involvement as a drummer in his band WhoMadeWho as well as countless solo releases across historic labels like Kompakt, Get Physical, and Turbo has established him as a remarkable electronic musician in Europe. And as a new vibrant member of the Los Angeles music community, Tomas Barfod has lots planned for the good people of LA, including his new record ‘Salton Sea‘ coming May 22 on Friends of Friends. To celebrate our new Los Angeles friend, the whole FoF Family are having a get together tonight at the Echoplex, so here’s a little something to wet your appetite!!

Sir D33J is a young gentleman who has been crafting wonderfully heartbreaking tunes along the West Coast with his Wedidit comrades. “Drowning Pools” is a short selection off his gorgeous “Tide Songs EP“, but it is a glowing example of his ecstatically melancholy sound.

We can’t get enough of the cloud traveling sounds from the talented GB. When this Ravel cover curled its way through the Internet to land in our lives we were blown to giddy dust. We hope you enjoy this take on a classic. Here are some words from the classy creator himself about the composition…

“Here’s my rendition of the sixth and final movement of Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, written in memory of Captain Joseph de Marliave, who died fighting in World War I with the French army. This piece was originally written for solo piano but here i have adapted it for four analog synthesizers.” – GB

Another one straight from Australia, we bring you the Sydney duo Ollo, which is composed of our mates Alex Crowfoot and Lars Chresta. They’ve been doing music for almost 15 years together, and alongside Metal Postcard Records they are about ready to bestow their new record “Ape Delay” to the world this May. Full Stop Blue is the last track on said record, and its a gorgeous and slow growing jam. Absolutely blissful.

Shoeb Ahmad is a flourishing composer from Canaberra, Australia, who is turning his love for drone and field recordings into his debut album, “Watch / Illuminate“. Natural Habitats along with Hannah Peel have added their own mystery mixers into the opening track to make the most euphoric sonic cocktail. Cheers!! Keep your eyes out for “Watch / Illuminate” this June via Mystery Plays Records.

Dilo‘s extended mix of Monotax‘s “Speaker Head” is an awesome rouse through all things groovy. In between the kicks and the claps the funk calls to you, so grab your lasso because this bouncy carriage is ready to roll. Find more from Monotax from via our pals at Igloo Records.

New Yorkers Peter Schuette and James Elliott combine their love for house, R&B, and John Carpenter film scores to bring you Test House. These guys are aiming straight for your heart and your heels, and All Hands Electric have got you covered, prepping their debut 12″ for release on April 24th. “Bitemarks” is the title track off their upcoming EP and this version right here is an exclusive extended jam, full of more of the soaring sounds that lift off when you get down on this record.

San Gabriel has revealed his plan of attack out for you, and the only way for you to decode it is if you throw it on the floor and dance all over it. Friend and collaborator of Lucky Dragons, Julia Holter, Sun Araw, and Nguzunguzu, San Gabriel (also known as the one and only Butchy Fuego) is preparing his gloriously frantic debut EP “Volfe” for the Time No Place label. Be ready for its release in May, Gore Text is only a small taste of the blitzkrieg that awaits.

Our friends at Halo Cyan Records recently enlisted the help of electronic musician and Palette Recordings founder John Tejada to bring you a preview of the label’s upcoming releases. Stay tuned into Halo Cyan for more musical magician-ship via their Facebook and Twitter pages!!

John Talabot is a young producer from Barcelona who takes the momentum that washes up in the waves on the Spanish coasts and interprets it into beautiful and atmospheric dance tunes. His debut album “ƒin”, out now via Permanent Vacation, makes it hard for you not to get lost in this translation, as it builds and releases through varied styles and sounds. If this record is a trip through the smokiest dancefloors of Spain, then “Estiu” is a postcard that brings back the memories of your vacation.

Dearborn sweethearts and godparents of guitar-based drift open the second half of Geographic North’s You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever 7” series with two testaments to the duo’s intangible, unparalleled magic. The two pieces here serve as a distillation of Windy & Carl’s ethereal compositions and a fitting companion to We Will Always Be, recently released via Kranky.

Information for Campers:
Camping tickets are one per person, not one per tent, which means that each person camping must present a camping ticket at the entrance regardless of whether you are sharing a tent. El Cosmico does not provide any camping gear. You will need to bring all gear with you, and note that there are limited resources in Marfa, so you won’t be able to buy camping gear in town. We do provide land to sleep on, a giant night sky to sleep under, basic bathroom facilities, and some barbecues for grilling food if you choose. Due to a fire ban, we will not allow campfires or any open flame.

El Cosmico is a natural terrain that can contain bugs, snakes, cacti, and other thorny plants, and all kind of other things you find in the high plains desert. We recommend boots, flashlight, sunscreen, and a hat. It tends to be warm in the day, but the temperatures fall dramatically at night, so bring layers and warm things to wear and to cover up with.

This happening is the weekend prior to SXSW so if you’re headed to Austin from the west coast come join us on the way!

Tonalism is s dusk-to-dawn event inspired by La Monte Young’s “Dream House” as well as the work of musicians and composers such as Terry Riley, Yoko Ono and John Cage. Tonalism combines harmonious textures in a surround sound system with visual elements to create an atmosphere where the audience is encouraged to bring pillows, cushions and sleeping bags to lay down, listen and watch for an extended period of time. DJs, live musicians and video artists play and perform throughout the night; starting at sunset and ending at sunrise. Complimentary tea and water are provided to all who attend.

Keep your eyes to the sky and ears to the wind for more sonic expeditions from Jincallo in 2012.

Swirling underneath storms of sounds lies the collections found on EMV’s Resolutions cassette. Like the other releases that have found a home at Leaving Records, this collection of DIY sonic adventuring exists in a universe all of its own making, difficult to decipher but so delicious to interpret. “Look Sharp” explores this balancing act with grace as it takes its very much Los Angeles roots and pulls them into a place much further and more mystifying. Matthewdavid once again delivers a mind-expanding-shattering-regenerating remix to the world. Ryan Power has been crafting musical gems for quite some time, and his fourth album, “I Don’t Want To Die”, is a beautiful exploration of unique sonic care and craft. Recorded in a barn apartment in Shelburne, VT and originally self released in 2010, our friends at NNA Tapes are now preparing a vinyl release slated for April 3rd. Enjoy the title track off the album and stay tuned into NNA Tapes for more musical magic in 2012.

dublab’s Jimmy Tamborello has launched his weekly “Dying Songs” live broadcast every Thursday from 12-2pm PST on dublab and we couldn’t be happier.  On his radio show Jimmy can always be trusted to share beautiful, obscure songs.  Under his production alias Dntel, he is also known to occasionally remix unknown musical gems into compositions of heightened beauty.  For a recent episode of “Dying Songs” he flipped a rarely known 1973 psych-folk song from the duo Heaven and Earth into a fluttering, electronic sparkler.

Luis Alberto Spinetta passed away today.  I was fortunate to remix a song that he sings on called Tantra Sky.
For those unfamiliar with his work, google his name and immerse yourself in his universe.  The vast territory of his legacy is too extensive to cover in this post.  So all I can offer is a video and a song.

LUIS ALBERTO SPINETTA “PARA MARIO”

Carlos Niño is an artist who connects to cosmic channels of love energy. He picks up on the positive vibrations pulsed out by the universe and reflects them through his music. The resulting compositions sound as effortless as the midnight tide but are as immense as the moon itself, which pulls the waves in and out from the shore.  His album AQUARIUSSSSSSS will be released May 17th on Disques-Corde and Porter Records.  This collection is a series of songs recorded with his many meditative music friends.  Here are some words from one of his featured collaborators, Ueno from Tenniscoats…

“The way that Carlos compiles sounds together and processes them is strange and fascinating. My memory of playing guitar with Jesse on one of the songs is like a small fragment, and this album is like a kaleidoscope made up of these countless fragments. When you listen to this album, the concept of individual songs melts away, and you’re absorbed in listening to the whole album as one big piece of music. Every single sound you hear is beautiful and serene, and you can surrender yourself to the gentle flow of the album.”

Suzanne Ciani’s sound-waves slide from the deepest recesses of space to live in the now. Her synth based compositions have been given bright new life due to the gateway known as Finders Keepers. Her compositions range from the bleep bloop of vintage video game scores to the bliss of weightless ambient floaters. Enjoy this song “Second Breath” from the collection Lixiviation 1969-1985.

Did you know that Julia Holter is a star? We’re not saying she is a flossy glossy MTV star. She’s a star of truly creative and artistic music. She has devoted her musical moments to reaching beyond the veil of the visible and accessing truly unique elements. Her Live Recordings cassette release on NNA Tapes is a gem. We hope you enjoy this selection from the magnetic collection of inventively out-there pop and gauzy dream tones. While you’re not likely to see Julia’s name splashed across a billboard anytime soon you are likely to fall deeply in love with her music.

You wake up from your dream with a start and now you’re sitting in the pitch black dark. What’s that swishing around in your mouth? It tastes of memories long forgotten. You suck your teeth and reach for the light but it’s not there. You close your eyes again and realize it was even darker with them open. You can feel your heart beating and then it happens…the entire world flashes with something brighter that light. They are patterns of your memories in rapid motion. Your being is encompassed in a kaleidescope of particles from your past swirled into symbols of your destiny. You can almost make out the shapes but then ZAP you open your eyes and all is dark again. You are always only dreaming.

The dublab & Stones Throw families have lit candles and mingled to make a baby in the form of the “Sounds of Symmetry 7 inch Volume 1.”  This is your opportunity to hear what happens when these two creative organizations get together to procreate.  The first round of next generation sound gems come courtesy of Stones Throw stalwart James Pants and dublab dandy Daedelus.

For his role, James Pants tugs his tuxedo t-shirt on tightly to man the microphone as a cruise ship sinks into the deep sea. Once below the crew and passengers are treated to a million refracted stars shimmering above the sea surface while ocean floor lovers twirl their tentacles with gasps and moans to this remixed version of Daedelus’ “An Armada Approaches.”

Germany’s outer plane focused rhythm genius Burnt Friedman is back with a new album, “Bokoboko,” to be released February 3rd on Nonplace. This collection sees Burnt continuing his explorations into sound spaces created with open-ended intentions in mind. His adventurous approach ensures the music remains as light as air floating in limbo. The song we offer you today is a perfect example of the genre blur Burnt so brilliantly brings into being.

We are celebrating the first mid-week moment of 2012 by presenting you this “Wednesday Tone Poem” from Turn On The Sunlight. The duo of Carlos Niño & Jesse Peterson have been creating lush, impressionistic compositions for several years and now, the two have brought an extended family of friends into the fold to create a collection of songs recently released as “Remixes / Collaborations” by our favorite Japanese label Disques-Corde. The song we offer you today, “Wednesday Tone Poem,” features Koen Holtkamp of dublab’s favorite ambient duo Mountains. We hope this gorgeous music makes your Wednesday a wonderful one.

dublab & Creative Commons invite you to explore the wide possibilities of forever through INTO INFINITY. This art and music exhibition is built on audio loops and visual circles. On the sound side we invited a diverse spectrum of music makers from around the world to contribute 8-second loops with any ambience, rhythm, tonality or texture they desired. These audio loops along with the visual elements are available to the public for sharing, remixing and utilizing in any other creative, non-commercial manner.

We’re thrilled to unveil the first round of INTO INFINITY remixes. The songs below were created using the exhibition’s original 8-second audio loops as their sole sound sources. No extra samples, instruments, vocals or sound sources were used in the creation of these songs.  Just like the original audio loops included in the exhibition these remixes are offered to the public under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial Copyright License. “I used pretty much all the samples available, nothing else. I used a max patch I did that allows me to have 8 streams of samples simultaneously which I can transform on the fly with various parameters. I thought that If I used them all this way I could deal with the mass of samples instead of just picking here and there. They are all great and together, they sound pretty good to me. Ciao.”

The compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones is a collection of underground music from the Saharan region which circulated almost exclusively from cellphone to cellphone via bluetooth bumps. I originally came across the digital archives of the compilation by stumbling across its Kickstarter campaign which was organized to raise funds in order to press the songs onto vinyl. I was fascinated by the idea of a musical subculture circulating in such a grass(sand)roots manner through an arid region. This is nomadic music of the most mysterious sort. I highly urge you to seek out the original cassette from Mississippi Records or as digital downloads: Volume 1 / Volume 2.

Now the folks at Boomarmnation have spear-headed a remix project called Music FOR Saharan Cellphones. dublab’s own Matthewdavid has created a stunning remix called “Stealing Sahara.” It’s a dirty south meets sand dune jam with a soft edge full of light snaking closer to distant dreams. We hope this song ends up back on a desert cellphone someday.

This is the explanation offered up by Porter Records for the movement of Trayer’s new album Afterlife An Abandoned Theme Park which includes “Dissolvi” the song we are offering to you…

“Part I, Dar Pomorza (tracks 1-8), the name of a ship found in a deserted scale-model-China theme park, merges primarily heavy, complex electronics with moaning stringed and wind instruments to show a wartime America through the eyes of Trayer’s deceased grandfather, a WWII veteran, and the glory that awaits him after death in battle. The turning point of Dar Pomorza is a recording of his grandfather presented as dying in his battlefield dream, underneath a reality of senility and pharmaceuticals, hearing his funeral elegy through his coffin before his ascension.”

While we wouldn’t have been able to guess the concepts that went into the creation of this composition we will wholeheartedly stand in astonishment of its multi-layered outcome. Yay for Porter! Keep putting these complex gems into the world.

“Twice a year, the non-profit internet radio collective dublab holds a fundraising drive to help cover its operational costs. Fifty percent of its funding comes from listeners. Mark “Frosty” McNeill, one of the co-founders and heads of dublab, is a tireless advocate and cultural curator, and as one of the first people I met after moving to Los Angeles, he’s fundamentally helped shape my time in this city over the last several years. So as both a participant in dublab activities as well as an avid fan of what they do, I try to do my part to contribute: by DJing during the drive, spreading the word, giving a donation.

How do you cheer up a sombre reptile? We suggest knitting it a cozy sweater formed from solar panels to ensure extra absorption of sun rays. This will allow even the most cold-blooded lizards to thrive in cloudy zones. Suzanne Kraft must have a lot of experience in the solar sweater field because he has covered Brian Eno’s “Sombre Reptiles” in such a wonderful way. Here’s to the happiness of scaly creatures!

Now, John has shed his aliases to release, “The Black Monk EP”, a joint offering from Hefty and 1320 Records. This five song collection is like a shadow cutting through the flickering projection of a noir film. These frames are filled with tense tones and deep mystery but all derived from gorgeous sources. Julia Holter is a woman of unwavering creative class. She drifts from structured, traditional worlds to rowdy freak waves without ever losing focus of the fine-tuned wonder of the moment. Her new album Tragedy on Leaving Records is as high concept as they come. It is a sound play taking root in the Ancient Greek Tragedy, Hippolytus. Tragedy is filled with clouds as chords and thunderclaps from stark blue skies with scorching Sun watching over every move of humans and gods alike. We invite you to explore this song “Goddess Eyes” and leave the next step up to you. This is a decision wrapped in drama and a result well worth your energy.

Bobb Trimble provides the soundtrack to your destiny and sets the tone for blazing forward. The Crippled Dog Band album is a newly re-released gem from our friends at Yoga Records. This is Bobb’s third album and was lost to the world when he tossed all 500 copies into a dumpster while he was down in the dumps. Only Yoga could have uncovered this previously unheard record an we’re so thrilled they did.

You may have heard Suzanne Kraft’s cool commotion before, emanating from dublab and his own Discotheque Records. Now the buzz has bounced to shores beyond, and Running Back Records will relay the vibes further with Suzanne’s first vinyl release, “Green Flash EP”. On March 11, 2011, the world witnessed a magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit the Tohoku region of Japan, resulting in a massive tsunami that swallowed whole towns , killed thousands, and destroyed nuclear reactors leading to widespread radiation leakage. The death toll has surpassed 10,000, over 17,000 are missing, and nearly 300,000 people are in temporary shelters. This news was quickly forgotten around the world, but it is said that it will take decades to restore the region.

The “LA♥JPN♥LA” compilation is a collection of exclusive tracks from artists in Los Angeles and Japan showing their solidarity in supporting the earthquake victims of Japan.

Curated by journalist and DJ Hashim B., Vol. 1 of the series features rising stars from the Low End Theory and L.A. beat scene such as Sweatson Klank (formerly Take), Mike Gao, Co.fee, Ras G, and Samiyam, as well as the new generation of Japanese beatmakers influenced by the L.A. scene such as Emufucka, fitz ambro$e, Bun, MONO X MONKEY, ichiro_, and a.z.

Mellower tracks contributed by Mitsu the Beats of Tokyo’s Jazzy Sport, 80′s electro-funk revivalist and Stones Throw artist Dam-Funk, and Japanese producers such as Inner Science, Chikaramanga(TRES Records), Rebel Musical, Shingo Suzuki, and Coffee & Cigarettes Band, show the diversity of the beat movement. Indie rockers Free Moral Agents contributed a fierce and emotional rendition of “IOLITE” recorded at Low End Theory. Kutmah features MC Dakim on the avant-rap track “It Started In The Heart”, and Low End Theory resident MC Nocando created “West Side Rentals” produced by DJ Nobody in dedication to the people of Japan.

Acoustic and ambient tones from artists such as Miguel Atwood-Ferguson & Carlos Nino, Golden HIts, Gaby Hernandez, and Turn On The Sunlight provide a sonic healing aspect to the collection.

Though the compilation’s focus is to offer longterm support to earthquake victims in Japan, it is also a means of introducing new talent from L.A. and Japan, and shedding light on the cross-cultural exchange that is happening between the two regions.

Vol. 2 which is set to be released in late August, will feature heavier beats and experimental rap from up and coming artists in L.A. and Japan, while Vol. 3 which will be released in September will focus on leftfield artists from the respective scenes.

All proceeds of the compilation series will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross and Civic Force to help those affected by the Tohoku Earthquake.

In late 2010 we had the great fortune to share a bill with Rei Harakami at Tokyo’s incredible club Unit. His set was so beautiful. Each note was pristinely crafted and sounded like rain drops rippling into a black hole. This morning we received the sad news that Rei passed away suddenly at the age of 40. We’re so saddened to hear of his passing and wish his family and friends comfort as they’re dealing with the loss. We’d like to share the song “After Joy” with you from Rei’s album Lust and a video for Yanokami’s (Akiko Yano & Rei Harakami) song “News.”

Our Austin-based homies Zorch have offered up some tunes to experience on many levels. You can enjoy the tunes as a passive music lover or get your hands busy by remixing the songs. This Zackey Force Funk and Kutmah collaboration sounds like the result of glove box pro-creation. It’s what happens when you cut your El Camino quick around a curb. Your tires curve and melt down leaving your black tag on road. As the rubber fumes up your tapes shift and crash in the glove box. An Egyptian Lover cassette topples into a Lowrider Bass Boom collection which is sent smashing into a tape of Zapp and Roger covers recorded by a monk living in a crystal pyramid deep in the desert.

The sky radiates in a brilliant explosion of colors. The stars so carefully painted in darkness have smeared across the heavens in blended light.
