“We don’t always have the chance to race right ahead and do what we want to do. So when the opportunity presents itself you should just take it.” That’s what I read when I cracked open the cookie and unfolded the paper. I sat up, wiped the crumbs from by pants, picked up the fortune, dropped some bucks on the table and jumped in my car. The thick trees blurred into green smudges as I zoomed through. The sky triangle widened as the forest opened before me. I pushed the accelerator deeper to the floorboards and slowed my breath to be more in the zone. As the horizon came closer I moved forward with the rushing wind. Soon the cliff’s edge was before me. I exploded off before the Sun had time to sparkle off the car’s chrome. I was hurtling beyond gravity’s bonds and in an instant threw the door open. Ss the car arced to its smashing finale in the canyon below I kept climbing higher and higher, casual as can be and here we are right now. Hello, let’s get to business. – frosty

Heather McIntosh + Butchy Fuego come together for a live dublab session of cello + mpc. Butchy is one of our favorite percussion champions in the whole wide universe and his friend Heather is an acclaimed cellist who has recently chosen to make LA her home. Enjoy this dublab “sprout session” where-in these new roommates bring you an in-sync sound session exploring “THE STORY OF THE ORIGIN OF ALL THINGS.” See image above for a diagram of this fully encompassing tale.

Heather McIntosh recently moved to Los Angeles from Athens, Georgia. House cellist for the Elephant 6 Collective, she has played with Of Montreal, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Music Tapes, Gerbils, Elf Power, Circulatory System, Apples in Stereo, Great Lakes, and The Ladybug Transistor. She has extended her talents outside of Athens performing with Linda Perhacs, Kevin Ayers of the Soft Machine, Faust, Animal Collective, Cat Power, Superchunk, M Ward, The Clientele, St. Vincent, Azure Ray, Icy Demons, Bright Eyes, Washed Out, Dr. Dog, Gnarls Barkley, and Lil’ Wayne.

Her folk/experimental band The Instruments has released three albums. Billions of Phonographs, Cast a Half Shadow, and Dark Småland are all available on Orange Twin Records.

She is also a co-founder and artistic director of AUX, an event and publication series devoted to experimental art in all forms. Based in Athens, Georgia, AUX has showcased the works of Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone, Faust, Korena Pang, Robert Schneider, The Black Swan Network, Michael Columbia, The Olivia Tremor Control, Pelican City, and Melted Men.

She most recently composed the score for the film Compliance, directed by Craig Zobel, which received a Sundance Cinereach Post-Production feature film grant.

Butchy Fuego is a producer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, recording engineer and visual artist. He has played all over the world with acts such as Boredoms, M.I.A., Pit Er Pat, Nite Jewel, Linda Perhacs, Rainbow Arabia, Aska Matsumiya, Matteah Baim, Hisham Bharoocha, NA FUEGO, Zach Hill, Lucky Dragons, in addition to performing solo and in numerous improvisational settings. In the studio, he’s worked with Red Krayola, Lou Barlow, The Congos, Pit Er Pat, Abe Vigoda, Aska Matsumiya, Soft Circle, Hecuba, These Are Powers, Rainbow Arabia, and countless others.

“You might be wondering how I filtered out the fuzz and narrowed down all the incredible releases I came across in 2011 into a succint three hour block. Well I guess the answer is a mystery to us both. I was quite daunted by the task because there were so many great tunes offered up by creative music makers this year. I was putting off the mission day after day after day, afraid the task would drag on into the next decade. To my great amazement the universe smiled on me because I awoke this morning with a scroll tucked tightly into my belt. Emblazoned in pure light on this parchment were the following songs. These are indeed some of my favorite tunes of the year so I guess fate has a way of working it all out.” – frosty

“Leaving on a holiday to Ethiopia was a dream come true. I became interested in the country through its music and needed to go there. Traveling in Ethiopia was not the easiest thing, but seeing the landscapes, talking with the people and hearing their music made it an essential trip. Armed with a Zoom recorder i started my journey in Addis Ababa, went South to the Tribes and flew North to see the historical sites. All Ethiopians are music lovers and also very proud about their sounds, composers and (musical) history. I recorded people chanting in churches, women singing and dancing to music in buses, bands playing in bars, etc…and mixed those with some other recordings I purchased and blended into a mix for just you.” – Tommy D

This mix was made with LPs found between Chile and Mexico in a manner to pay hommage to Roberto Bolaño’s literature for the infrarealist newspaper “Estrella Cercana” (Close Star) which was part of the exhibition of the same name held during the Autumn of 2011 in Mexico City’s Kurimanzutto Gallery. It is also an hommage to Chilean psychedelic music and to the Chileans who, like Bolaño, lived, wandered and fantasized in the Mexico of the seventies. This mix is dedicated to the memory of Monna Bell.

Our dear friend Marcus Fischer runs his life on a different calendar than most folks. He doesn’t sit on his hands waiting for inspiration to strike. He ensures this sort of energy is part of his every breath so that he stays swift as an arrow flying forward with ideas buzzing from his head into crystal clear being. We’ve had the opportunity to share various music from Marcus’ band Unrecognizable Now and his solo project map~map with you over the past several years. Now we’re excited to bring you dublab’s final audio archive posting of 2011 in the form of a solo recording by Marcus. I won’t tell you mucch about what you’ll be hearing. Non Projects joined dublab in our carefully crafted cove of progressive musical exploration in the midst of Austin’s annual South x Southwest chaos fest. Our energies emerged in the form of the “What x What-ever” live transmissions broadcast from within the haven of creative light called Domy Books. During their visit Anenon and Gold & Soil (Asura + Ana Caravelle) brought lovely moments to light and reached beyond the immediate surroundings to share a bit of beauty with the wide world.

Peter Case is a man who has glided through the side streams of music for decades and all the while influenced wider circles. He was a spark for some of the west coast’s most blazing musical moments. You might have heard these yourself or absorbed them via ripples as they filtered up to the mainstream. In the mid-1970′s he fronted the new wave trio the Nerves who helped light the fuse for the Los Angeles punk scene and were famously covered by Blondie. He then formed the Plimsouls who buzzed their way across radio airwaves in the early 80′s and can be heard throughout the soundtrack of the film “Valley Girl.” Case’s solo career in the decades since these early, influential bands has earned high acclaim and these days find him recording, touring, writing and curating wide ranging music projects.

For his dublab “Sprout Session” Peter ripped through raw rarities riding on roars of distortion and softer jams encircled in folk overtones. Between songs you can hear an interview with dublab dj and former Plimsouls producer Danny Holloway. It was an honor to have Peter grace the dublab studio. We hope you enjoy this session from a music icon.

This episode of dublab’s “Monday Music Meeting” features a special guest set and interview with Non Projects artist and founder Anenon broadcast as he was preparing to head to the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid this November. Brian shared his anticipations of the experience and how it would impact his artistic trajectory. He then shared an depth dj mix of the sounds that influence him.

Design and music are intimately linked like high school lovers locked in a tongue twisting, locker humping embrace. After all the gum swapped in this hot and heavy, long running legacy of merged passion it’s incredible that the possibilities of the blend are still endless. The seven inch record format is the decades long mainstay of punk rock, noise, and indie music because most folks interested in filling the world with these sounds is broke. The relatively low cost of pressing seven inches makes it an ideal way to crystallize explosive tones. Thankfully the resulting records often arise with inspired hand made covers full of glue, grit, imperfect ink and collaged craziness.

If you’ve pined to see a wide survey of the best 7″ embodied mayhem that has been unleashed upon the world over the past few decades you’re in luck. Brian Roettinger, Mike Treff, and Diego Hadis have compiled 300 creative designs into a book called Touchable Sound available now via Sound Screen Design. To celebrate the release of Touchable Sound, Brian graced the dublab studio to share some of the music behind the images. He is not only an incredible designer, grammy-nominated for his packaging of No Age’s album “Nouns” but also a musician and die-hard fan of obscure vinyl releases. The bottom line is you’re in good hands. Tune in and swap spit with these inspiring sounds.

What happens when you have a record shop full of heat? It attracts fiends like a flame and quickly becomes a home for heads devoted to searching for the beats far beyond the “perfect” ones everyone else is looking for. Since Scott Craig opened his cozy Records L.A. shop deep in the West Adams district of Los Angeles he’s casually lured a loyal clientele of vinyl freaks who rub elbows and sip on beer while flipping through the well stocked bins. For dublab’s “Sounds of Symmetry” Proton Drive fundraiser Scott gathered a posse of his shop regulars to share a sampling of the Records L.A. rare wax wavelength. High Wolf is one of our favorite cosmic wave runners. His supernatural sound compositions are high energy enhancers. During South x Southwest this year High Wolf joined dublab’s “What x What-ever” live transmission from Domy Books and played a dj set exploring wide rhythmic ranges rooted in African soul.

On April 23, 2011 our friends from Cinefamily and Cinespia presented a cinematic field trip to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. This happening was centered around the L.A. premiere of Werner Herzog’s 3-D documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” which screened inside the museum’s North American Mammal Hall.

In addition to the film, the entire museum was turned into a space for sonic exploration. dublab had the honor to present performances in the wondrous NHM Gem & Mineral Hall. As the precious stones glimmered around us, Matthewdavid, M. Geddes Gengras, frosty and Katie Byron shared sounds. Also, on hand was Turquoise Wisdom, a DJ perfectly suited to such a luminous atmosphere. His selections flowed vividly across the spectrums of reflected light.
