(Godfrey Reggio, 2023, USA, 52 minutes)

Since his 1982 breakthrough with Koyaanisqatsi, experimental-leaning documentarian (or is it documentarian-leaning experimental filmmaker?) Godfrey Reggio has not been especially prolific, averaging about one feature per decade. Once Within a Time, his first since 2013’s Visitors, is a mid-length work with all of his usual hallmarks: unlikely juxtapositions, stunning vistas, hope/terror for the future, all tied together by a hypnotic Philip Glass score. As with 2002’s Naqoyqatsi, Steven Soderbergh signed on as Executive Producer.
Showing with:
Interim (Jess Pierce, 2023, USA, 9 minutes)
Expressed through a series of reconstructed conversations between loved ones and a visual landscape of vaguely familiar spaces, Interim is a wandering short film that explores the time and space between concrete meaning and action.
And:
Harinezumi movies (Matt Amato, various, USA, 39 minutes)
Director’s statement: The Harinezumi camera (the Japanese digital answer to the Super8) fell into my hands in 2010 when I participated in a group show at the New Museum/NYC alongside video artists Bruce La Bruce, Jonas Mekas, Albert Maysles, Harmony Korine, Mark Borthwick, Kim Gordon, Miranda July, Errol Morris and more. This tiny camera offers total freedom of expression releasing me from self imposed rules and ideas of perfection. The results offer many surprises especially how it catches color and light. It’s playful always and allows a closeness with your subjects that just doesn’t happen with other cameras. Reviewing the past work, I can now see that there is a truly timeless quality to the footage as opposed to all the other digital formats. Powershovel/JPN, the innovative company that designed it using spare parts from the Soviet space program (like the incredible deep focus lens) is no longer in operation. I cherish every moment I still have with this beautiful camera and continue to use it to this day. This program is comprised of my work with the Harinezumi including official music videos (local artists Jack Grelle and Elizabeth McBride, dublab artists Golden Hits in Oregon and Pharoahs at the Museum of Neon Art, Wild Nothing ft. actor Michelle Williams, folk singer Withered Hand in Edinburgh/SCT, electronic soul duo Quadron in downtown Los Angeles, experimentalist Mathewdavid in Tokyo/JPN) plus a short film starring singer/songwriter Mia Doi Todd and Azul Niño filmed in Silver Lake, CA. This short film titled Growing Pains reveals the full power of the Harinezumi in its ability to capture precious and fleeting moments of time.
With directors Pierce and Amato at the December 12 show only.
