The "future" side kicks off with tropical tones and vibrant rhythms from the Ruby Suns. These New Zealand cats stir up bounce and melody that jet like a dazzling propellant. "Kenya Dig It?" is a stunning swirl into the cosmos of bright light. Astrologers and oracles beware! Upon every listen your senses will zap with vibes of the next big thing.
Teengirl Fantasy are a dynamic young duo crafting electronics with enthusiasm. Their touring with Telepathe and shows with folks like Dan Deacon have been getting peers and strangers riled up. "Portofino" is a pure explosion of unbridled energy. This tune is like a micro-rave symphony undulating with arpeggio and raw static. It will be welcomed by wide open ears in jeeps booming through the subconscious and beyond.
Hecuba are making music as artful magic. The creative duo write sound stories that project from the head to the dancefloor with equal power. Lucky people who heard Hecuba on tour with Bat for Lashes will enthusiastically second this statement. The bountiful beauty of "Miles Away" comes from its delicately paced blossoming. A simple siren leads to a vocal/beat pulsation that builds into an explosion of laser light love that mellows back into kettle drum rolls. This pleasing formula makes us feel perfectly at home with Hecuba.
Zackey Force Funk is a phenomenon set to explode. His homemade jams have attracted the attention of the dublab family, producers like Baron Zen and will soon surely be buzzing strong on blogs. This Tucson, Arizona based cat is set on an agenda of balancing raw chaos and beautiful soul. "Bombs" is an apocalyptic lullaby set to sounds reflected from Brian Eno’s lost beat tape loops. As the smoke clears we will all wonder where the world was before Zackey’s arrival.
FLIP!
The "roots" side is ushered in on the polyrhytms of the Lucky Dragons’ sublime kalimba crafted psychedelia. These wizards have found modern motion in ancient material and the world has embraced them warmly for it. They’re right at home in high cultural spaces (2008 Whitney Biennial, George Pompidou Center in Paris), living rooms and all ages noise rock clubs like LA’s legendary Smell. Lucky Dragons live shows instantly stretch smiles across faces and their recorded material has equally positive energy. "Are we Alright?" yes yes yes we are.
matthewdavid & OBA are creating musique concrète jams for Moon-based jump rope teams. The growing circle of matthewdavid’s fans know his folk-infused sounds are already otherworldly in their super saturation and when combined with the mysterious OBA’s musical mind they take on whole new dimensions of awe. Their bump and clank soundtrack "roomthumpr" is sure to shake and rattle speakers to the highest elevation.
Julia Holter is finely focused on intimate orchestrations. Her handful of releases on the consistently incredible Human Ear Music label are avant-garde gems that soak into souls with a feel that flows. Julia’s contribution to in the loop, the ultimately awesome "Moto Perpetuo," is an exercise in elegant minimalism filled with essences of the far east and the far out. This is music for daydream teleportation journeys.
White Rainbow makes soundtracks for future dreams. This fellow from rainy Portland sets sleeping hearts swooning with his ambient atmospheres and psychedelic signals. His improvised performances around the universe are as renowned as his recordings. "Mind Haze is Clear Delight" is a perfect closing tune for this collection. Its deep fuzz filled drone is a miracle of weightless wonder ensuring that after the echoes soak in you’ll flip this loop for another listen.
