Mark Maxwell

Mark Maxwell has been involved in L.A. jazz for approximately three decades. He began playing saxophone in the mid-’80s, studying briefly with Harold Battiste. Through most of the 90’s he co-led an acoustic jazz band called Biafra which got its start at 5th Street Dick’s in Leimert Park. He was also a member of Carlos Nino’s celebrated soul jazz ensemble Build An Ark since it’s 2001 inception. Maxwell has also emceed for a number of local jazz performances and events, lectured on jazz at local colleges and has published a feature article on free jazz. His DJ adventures began in Venice, CA about 25 years ago playing afro-beat, bossa nova, classic hip-hop, disco, funk, jazz, rare groove, rhythm & blues, reggae, salsa, samba, soul (and much more!).
