dublab presents the Sounds of Now

On October 3rd, 2020, dublab celebrated 21 years of community powered radio with a 24 hour online event, featuring DJ sets and live performances. Rhys Langston put together this live performance for a special anniversary broadcast.

Rhys Langston is an artist working in the fields of fine art, literature, music, performance, and the cracks between those disciplines. Born, raised, and based in Los Angeles, CA, he came to musical expression late in his adolescence, coinciding with his decision to attend Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

Early musical projects like Aggressively Ethnically Ambiguous and Full Frontal Incumbent, An Incongruous Mixtape solidified nascent experiments in form and content. The former explored the performances of race and identity, and the latter delved into the space between emotional intimacy and self-effacing abstraction. 2019’s pairing of EPs, Master Fader on Speed Dial and the 10 minute visual The T.C. Wash Suite distinguished his particular mastery of inserting idiosyncratic wordplay into short form rap earworms. However, 2020’s Language Arts Unit saw Rhys Langston re-establishing the breadth of his abilities. As his first full length record, entirely mixed and (mostly) produced by him, it is paired with a paperback book and interactive online literary experience. Receiving praise from the likes of DJ Booth, HipHopDX, Tablet Magazine, and others, he is firmly in his own corner, re-defining what accessible and impactful art can look and sound like. With this project establishing his multimedia strengths, he continues work between forms, blurring sound and meaning, education and entertainment, earnestness and whimsy.
