dublab presents the Sounds of Now

Connective Tissue is about the spaces between sound, ideas and people. Featuring underground artists from across the electronic spectrum as well as themed excursions into rhythms at large, Kathi delves into dance music, as well as into the connections that make it possible. The party hiatus forced by the pandemic prompted a personal need to reevaluate what DJing can do as an inherently contextual, fluid, and community-based practice, within and beyond nightlife. Connective Tissue seeks to explore this question through conversations, guest contributions, and experimentation with the 2-hour radio format. Sonic syncretism, fluidity, and genre irreverence will be celebrated in every episode.

This episode of Connective Tissue features my paisana Gabrielle Garcia Steib, who, deviating from her usual visual media, created a gorgeous audio collage. Gabby is an archivist, filmmaker and photographer from New Orleans frequenting Nicaragua and Mexico. She is interested in ways in which Latin America is connected with the deep south, specifically ways in which collective memory and images are used to communicate in political landscapes. I’m a big fan of Gabby’s archival IG account @imagenesdenicaragua and was curious what she would gather together in an audio setting. The result is a beautiful mix of música sentimental y sensual, strung together with select spoken word clips and other gems. Hear for yourself in the first hour. Second hour by me, continuing the nostalgia, moving into reggaeton, and finally ending up at the beach, via the club.
