Joko Homo w/Michael Schneider — Discoteca Imaginaria: Walking in LA (and Measure HLA)
02.06.24
While the global pandemic may have put a damper on our adventures in clubbing, music still has the power to transport us to places unknown. For now, the greatest club on earth may exist in our imagination – Discoteca Imaginaria. Each episode takes listeners to the scenes, clubs, regions and technology that have shaped our sonic history.

LA’s affinity towards the automobile is well documented, from the endless strip malls of Edward Ruscha’s photography to the new wave classic “Walking in LA.” While it’s easy to become complacent with our built environment, the price Angelenos pay for car dependency has become increasingly grim. In 2023, more people died walking in LA than any other year since the city began keeping track of pedestrian fatalities over 20 years ago. This is despite a 2035 Mobility Plan that is meant to bring bike lanes, crosswalks, roundabouts, bus lanes, and other traffic calming measures to our streets. Only a mere 5% of the plan has been implemented since it was passed by City Council in 2015.
My guest Michael Schneider and his non-profit Streets For All hopes Measure HLA can help overcome this crisis. If passed on March 5th by voters, it would require the city to implement its own Mobility Plan every time roadwork like repaving or sewage repairs occurs. Since the Mobility Plan was already approved and funded almost 10 years ago, these vital improvements wouldn’t require any new taxes or fees. Measure HLA would simply hold the city accountable for implementing its own plan and creating a more sustainable, equitable city.
Listen to my conversation with Michael in this week’s episode, and please vote in the March 5th Election!
