Black Audio Society: Free World Meditation

10.11.24

Black Audio Society is a collective effort lead by Gum.mp3 for the conservation and enjoyment of black music. The aim is to identify sociopolitical context, analyze the development and mixture of genres over time, and imagine the future of black music in both theory and practice. Through guest mixes and periodic deep dives into the history of this music, B.A.S. serves as an alternative destination for black music discovery and appreciation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This month’s mix is a loosely guided meditation on the historical and political contexts of Rastafari and Afrofuturism, soundtracked by 2 hours of reggae/dub and jazz. Central to the framing of this mix is Benjamin Zephaniah’s Rasta Time In Palestine. Standout tracks from the mix are Burning Spear’s “Cry Blood Africa” and Hugh Mundell’s “Africa Must Be Free By 1983.”
