dublab presents the Sounds of Now

Ghorba Radio is a monthly show highlighting artists of marginalized genders in Los Angeles and beyond. Expect electro, house, techno and ambient, mixed with dance music from around the world.

On this month’s episode, Ghorba hosts guest mixes from Femme Synthetic and L. Coats

FEMME SYNTHETIC:
I am a Non Binary DJ/ Music Producer/ Video Artist and Los Angeles Native. I have been wandering the underground nightlife in Los Angeles for years. I had a time of finding myself, sold all my audio equipment and wandering the west coast for years till I found what I was looking for. The last few years have been of major change after finally feeling like I had found myself and was ready to let that vision of me out into the world… that certainly was intensely scary lol. I have been collecting music all my life and fell in love with music production in late 2008. Just before the whole world closed in 2020 I had finally picked a mixer to pursue my ongoing desire to learn to mix and share all this music that had my heart burning up with joy dancing alone in my room. I have been streaming 1 to 2 hour audio/visual streams every Friday on my Twitch account and post my mixes and audio improvisations to my SoundCloud. Huge interest in finding community amidst fellow Los Angeles artists and also volunteer at Fem Synth Lab.

MIX DESCRIPTION:
This mix is a collection of music released during the Pandemic from around the word and kept my heart alive and my body moving through strange times. It was an improvised recording from a 8 hour playlist recorded from a Tiny House in East Los Angeles.

L. COATS:
L. Coats is an artist, musician, and director in Los Angeles. She began mixing this year via radio broadcast (Gates on HKCR, What’s Beyond on entropyfm) and she occasionally performs under her DJ alias Hydragen. She is the creator of the renegade generator-rave series desiredfx.

Coats is one half of the experimental duo Glyph, whose debut EP Infinity Deal is out this month. She is also part of Woodbrain, the off-grid ranch band that creates primeval club tracks using driftwood and construction tools (debut album set for a 2022 release on Tingo Tongo Tapes).

As a dj, she feels most comfortable improvising live, doing b2bs with her friends, organizing events, making unexpected mashups, and digging for $1 trance records. She believes in the deeply transformative power of dance music, especially its ability to be playful. Her favorite thing is when a dj can tell a story and make her laugh in the club. Hydragen’s sets always strive for a hard hitting, emotional, demented, sensuous, absurd, sexy, mythical feeling. She hopes this mix can fuel a full-body pilgrimage towards ecstasy.
