dublab presents the Sounds of Now

On his weekly Celsius Drop show, dublab co-founder Frosty guides you through an exploration of the vast Future Roots music spectrum.

On this episode of Celsius Drop, originally airing just days after the anniversary of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda’s transcendence from the earthly plane, Frosty was honored to share this richly documented archival radio program—independently produced over three decades ago by New York based audio artist, Dolores Brandon. Looking back on her motives for creating this rare two-hour tribute to the musician and spiritual leader now so widely beloved, Brandon recalls a time when Alice Coltrane was not so well known.

In 1987 when I produced THE EVOLUTION OF ALICE COLTRANE, Alice was barely known outside serious jazz circles; even there she was often dismissed, misrepresented and underestimated. It was hard to find or buy the recordings she and John made together – she was a pianist in his quintet of the mid 60’s. Her most uniquely personal devotional music was definitely not known commercially.

When I heard she was coming to New York to do a concert LIVE at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, I decided that was the time to seize my opportunity to meet her, interview her and to create a radio portrait in music tracing her journey

Fate stepped in and by serendipity I was referred to Reggie Workman, who contacted Alice on my behalf and an interview was arranged. The concert at the Cathedral was mind blowing. In the interview she was a complete delight – humble, honest and profound.

She remains an inspiration in my life. With THE EVOLUTION OF ALICE COLTRANE it was my privilege to showcase the full range of her genius.
