Osei started playing music as an adolescent after breaking into a burned-out country club with a group of friends. The group was inspired to write and film a horror movie in the building, but after the idea was dismissed by their parents, they shifted their approach and wrote the story as a punk horror musical. Essed played bass in a number of punk and noise bands until discovering Lightnin Hopkins, Bob Dylan, and the acoustic guitar in his late teens and began writing songs inspired by this newly discovered soundscape.
Film composer Dan Romer had been a member of Osei’s band The Woes for a number of years, and a collaboration with Romer and fellow bandmate Oscar Chabebe on Sara Dosa’s The Last Season was Essed’s first film score.
