Cassette Listen of Unknown Movie Night: The Red Turtle
03.23.24

Record label and experimental music champion AKP Recordings resurrects the Quadraphonic Cassette today by releasing Arthur King – UMN (The Red Turtle) in a unique no-adhesive, paper package.
UMN (Unknown Movie Night) is Arthur King’s recurring series of live, improvised film-scoring events where the selected film is unknown to both audience and band until it begins. Discerning film selectors and a rotating cast of guest musicians join Arthur King in making each event unique, taking participants on a journey into the undiscovered.
Performed through a quadraphonic sound system, this composition is Arthur King’s reaction to Michaël Dudok de Wit’s Studio Ghibli production, the 2016 animated fantasy The Red Turtle, as chosen by the evening’s Film Selector: dublab’s Alejandro Cohen at The River LA on May 24, 2023. For this performance, Arthur King is Carla Azar, David Ralicke, M.A. Tiesenga, Senon Williams, and Peter Walker.
The album was recorded by Andy Petr and Jennifer Kraus, produced and mixed by Peter Walker and KamranV, and mastered by Phil Feinman and KamranV. This radio broadcast is playback of a cassette tape encoded using the dublab Quadraphonic Universally Accessible Resource Kit (QUARK), enabling seamless quadraphonic or binaural listening via standard 2-channel playback, immersive hi-fi receivers, or computer. QUARK is made possible by dublab & the National Endowment for the Arts. The live performance was made possible by a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Echo Park Chamber of Commerce.
