The Witch’s Flight: In Search of the Black Femme in Amapiano
Using the radio as a portal to alternative artistic possibilities and freedom dreams, this show centers both music and dialogue. The premise of the show is guided by the question; “What does freedom SOUND like?” and in this sense the radio becomes a portal and a sonic guide to diverse freedom soundscapes. Bringing the museum, the classroom and the club dancefloor to the radio––The Witch’s Flight is a portal to creative possibilities across the African diaspora. Conjuring sonic interpretations of visual art, theories and diverse cultural production–– host Zama Dube positions the Black femme in amapiano as an extension of her own Black feminist sensibility. Whilst the show does not exclude other identities, she finds it important to place an emphasis on women and queer artists, as they are often erased in mainstream media. Therefore, her serves as a part of the praxis part of her dissertation. The show is structured as a series of conversations, creative musings and DJ mixes featuring artists that are both her creative peers and interlocutors.
The aim of the show is to place music at the center, in order to create discourse that is accessible yet informative and entertaining. This show is a fest of all of Zama’s favorite things––good music, inspiring company, meaningful conversation and musings on art. What fuels the show is her genuine love and curiosity for Black expressive cultures from everywhere in the diaspora.
