Get Ready to Punk: A retrospective of Los Angeles Punk

06.16.24

Los Angeles punk was born in the late 1970s. LA punk was quite a rebellious genre of music responding to societal issues. Bands like X, The Germs, and The Weirdos set the stage aggressively with their music. Venues like The Masque became quite a common spot for these bands to perform in, creating quite a creative community. The music was best known for its fast tempos, gritty sound, and not always but commonly political issues lyrics. LA punk influenced different types of genres and not just music, fashion, and art were also heavily influenced by LA punk. Bands like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and Bad Religion expanded the genre even more. They influenced and inspired new genres of LA punk bands with fans by bringing raw energy, rebellious lyrics, and attitude to the LA punk scene.

In this radio documentary, you can expect a mix of LA punk songs from the more well-known bands in the genre. Also, an interview featuring LA Punk legend and record producer of Frontier Records Lisa Fancher, who asked a series of questions. LA punk-related of course and her past. I hope you also enjoy my cover art, a design made by Mari, a two-year dublab intern.

This project is produced by Mari as part of her internship program at dublab and made possible by Exploring the Arts Foundation.
