dublab was thrilled to curate a night as part of Luaka Bop’s residency at John Zorn’s venue The Stone in NYC. The series, curated by Luaka Bop gents Yale Evelev & Mat Hall, featured an incredible array of wide spectrum waves in an intimate, art sound setting. On December 23, 2011 dublab proudly presented two mind rippling artists we love dearly, The Present and Roberto Carlos Lange. These talented folks represented our Future Roots sound aesthetic perfectly with live performances at the Stone.

As a dedicated dublab listener you are probably familiar with the Present from their soaring “Sprout Session” a few years back. You also probably know The Present’s Rusty Santos from his wow wow wow sound creations on UUAR and production spells for Panda Bear, White Magic, Animal Collective, Owen Pallett and a gazillion more mystic music makers. So without further ado here are a few words from Rusty about The Present’s performance at The Stone followed by the live recording…

Appetite swoop down from their Sacramento homebase to grace the dublab studio for a live “sprout session.” There’s definitely something in the water up there because a flood of talent has been pouring from those capitol city streets. Appetite, led by the fearless Teddy Briggs, are an example of the highly developed sound that’s forming in this community. He is making music that is on a unique wavelength but feeds thoughtfully into the foundation of a strong creative circle. Tune into this special session to catch another gem from a blossoming scene.

Mountains is the friendly duo of Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp. They have released a string of particularly beautiful, expansive albums on Thrill Jockey. Their dublab “sprout session” is like a warm afternoon spent on a distant moon. Roll out your mylar beach blanket under swaying tendrils of gem encrusted palms and lay down to soak in the scene. The aquamarine sand stands in vivid contrast to the silver swirling sea of floral scented gas that laps at your toes in warm billowing clouds. There’s an island in the distance that has purple hues and a halo of light but that’s a swim for another day. Today you are here to climb this mountain of relaxation.

Pregnant will become a significant part of your sound psyche. His creations are those which you see imprinted upon your eyes after staring into the golden Sun from atop a crystalline mountain range. The grass grows hundreds of feet high from the valleys below and sways around your legs as you reach upwards. Clouds swirl around you like dreams of dragon breath. You reach ever higher, arms outstretched alongside your electric body breathing in the world. The patterns in your visions shift by the moment and within them are a thousand x a thousand luminous signs. At this moment you hear a bell and the chimes sound like rain and the beat begins to shake and the sky rattles down rain to warm your face. This is the new beginning and it’s all you bargained for and more.

dublab favorite Aska Matsumiya is a woman whose toes are dipped into the ether of many bright worlds. She is an artist who inspires others to take leaps and travel with her to explore new fields. We’re thrilled she brought her new band ESP to our studios for a live “sprout session.” The trio of Aska, Bobby Evans and Seiya reached out with their ESP waves to map the world of future music. You can hear their discoveries in this dublab “sprout session.” This is pop music projected through a cosmic prism. ESP is sure to expand your spectrum.

The personal is political in the music of SoCal’s Vaginals. Social and musical orthodoxy go out the window; role models include Lenny Bruce and likely Frank Zappa for La Cochina and company. Heather McIntosh + Butchy Fuego come together for a live dublab session of cello + mpc. Butchy is one of our favorite percussion champions in the whole wide universe and his friend Heather is an acclaimed cellist who has recently chosen to make LA her home. Heather McIntosh recently moved to Los Angeles from Athens, Georgia. House cellist for the Elephant 6 Collective, she has played with Of Montreal, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Music Tapes, Gerbils, Elf Power, Circulatory System, Apples in Stereo, Great Lakes, and The Ladybug Transistor. She has extended her talents outside of Athens performing with Linda Perhacs, Kevin Ayers of the Soft Machine, Faust, Animal Collective, Cat Power, Superchunk, M Ward, The Clientele, St. Vincent, Azure Ray, Icy Demons, Bright Eyes, Washed Out, Dr. Dog, Gnarls Barkley, and Lil’ Wayne.

Her folk/experimental band The Instruments has released three albums. Billions of Phonographs, Cast a Half Shadow, and Dark Småland are all available on Orange Twin Records.

She is also a co-founder and artistic director of AUX, an event and publication series devoted to experimental art in all forms. Based in Athens, Georgia, AUX has showcased the works of Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone, Faust, Korena Pang, Robert Schneider, The Black Swan Network, Michael Columbia, The Olivia Tremor Control, Pelican City, and Melted Men.

She most recently composed the score for the film Compliance, directed by Craig Zobel, which received a Sundance Cinereach Post-Production feature film grant.

Butchy Fuego is a producer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, recording engineer and visual artist. He has played all over the world with acts such as Boredoms, M.I.A., Pit Er Pat, Nite Jewel, Linda Perhacs, Rainbow Arabia, Aska Matsumiya, Matteah Baim, Hisham Bharoocha, NA FUEGO, Zach Hill, Lucky Dragons, in addition to performing solo and in numerous improvisational settings. In the studio, he’s worked with Red Krayola, Lou Barlow, The Congos, Pit Er Pat, Abe Vigoda, Aska Matsumiya, Soft Circle, Hecuba, These Are Powers, Rainbow Arabia, and countless others.

What’s it going to be? The moment is here and Matthewdavid wants you to take action if you’re ready. He has laid the fractured funk out in front of you. Every shard glistens with iridescent oils. Our dear friend Marcus Fischer runs his life on a different calendar than most folks. He doesn’t sit on his hands waiting for inspiration to strike. He ensures this sort of energy is part of his every breath so that he stays swift as an arrow flying forward with ideas buzzing from his head into crystal clear being. We’ve had the opportunity to share various music from Marcus’ band Unrecognizable Now and his solo project map~map with you over the past several years. Now we’re excited to bring you dublab’s final audio archive posting of 2011 in the form of a solo recording by Marcus. I won’t tell you mucch about what you’ll be hearing. Non Projects joined dublab in our carefully crafted cove of progressive musical exploration in the midst of Austin’s annual South x Southwest chaos fest. Our energies emerged in the form of the “What x What-ever” live transmissions broadcast from within the haven of creative light called Domy Books. During their visit Anenon and Gold & Soil (Asura + Ana Caravelle) brought lovely moments to light and reached beyond the immediate surroundings to share a bit of beauty with the wide world.

Peter Case is a man who has glided through the side streams of music for decades and all the while influenced wider circles. He was a spark for some of the west coast’s most blazing musical moments. You might have heard these yourself or absorbed them via ripples as they filtered up to the mainstream. In the mid-1970′s he fronted the new wave trio the Nerves who helped light the fuse for the Los Angeles punk scene and were famously covered by Blondie. He then formed the Plimsouls who buzzed their way across radio airwaves in the early 80′s and can be heard throughout the soundtrack of the film “Valley Girl.” Case’s solo career in the decades since these early, influential bands has earned high acclaim and these days find him recording, touring, writing and curating wide ranging music projects.

For his dublab “Sprout Session” Peter ripped through raw rarities riding on roars of distortion and softer jams encircled in folk overtones. Between songs you can hear an interview with dublab dj and former Plimsouls producer Danny Holloway. It was an honor to have Peter grace the dublab studio. We hope you enjoy this session from a music icon.

The Parisian posse La Femme turned us onto their synthy-surf-sounds through the Le Podium #1 EP. When we discovered they were planning an extended rampage through our coastal lands we invited them in for a live dublab “sprout session.” The resulting bouncy jams sound like a wave of shaking hips crashing down to a dance-floor that never stops spinning. As La Femme whipped up a whirlpool of frenzied fun Alex Pelly and her film companions from the Masses were on hand to capture the studio scenes using compact Digital Harinezumi cameras. We hope you enjoy these super saturated sights and sounds.

For the dublab curated “Listen to Art” happening at LACMA, Turquoise Wisdom created a sound collage using recordings selected by Stefan Kloo from the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles Media Lounge to complement the pieces in LACMA’s German Expressionism Collection. Years ago dublab hosted a weekly happening at the Temple Bar (now shuttered but still shining in our memories ) in Santa Monica, California. We attempted to present a diverse range of music covering every shade of the future roots spectrum. We hosted a particularly special evening with the band Telefon Tel Aviv. This archive had slipped through the server cracks over the years but we stumbled upon it recently and decided to revive it for you. Charlie Cooper, one half of Telefon Tel Aviv, has since tragically passed away but Josh Eustis continues making music under the TTA moniker. If you crack open a dusty dictionary and flip through inches of pages to the word “composed” you will not find a picture of Anenon sketched next to the definition but, if you listen to his music and dwell on his personal mission of cultured sound dissemination you will be hard pressed to disassociate the artist and this word. Brian Simon, the young man behind Anenon and the collective / record label Non Projects always carries a poised air. Remember that kid in science class with the cool patterned sweater that had strands of yarn coming loose at the cuffs from hours spent earnestly drawing the flowers of exotic plants discovered on the yellowing pages of overdue library books? It was this same kid who after school would skip the typical hours of television in favor of deep walks into nature. His lunch was trail mix and mix tapes, not candy bars and candy coated conversation. He wasn’t a social misfit and he wasn’t a loner. He was quiet and thoughtful and cultured. We’re not saying this kid is Asura but it is the kind of person who would naturally connect with Ryan York’s highly textured, beautiful tones. Asura makes music for kind hearts and bright minds. The Root Down holds a place of high legend in the history of the Los Angeles underground music community. Every Thursday night for over a decade the Root Down gathered LA’s soul/funk/hip-hop/roots/latin music lovers under one roof to dance and socialize. For six of those years the roof over The Root Down was a spot called Gabah. It was an unassuming joint on Melrose Avenue in East Hollywood. The biggest action in the neighborhood was usually the constant flow of cars on and off the freeway ramps. What those car didn’t know, as they whizzed past in their bubbles, was that another bubble was vibrating nearby.

The Root Down was a community cocoon. A fresh zone of soulful, forward thinkers who gave respect due to the pioneers of the past while creatively chopping their way into the future. The Root Down braintrust: Loslito, Miles Tackett, Dusk (Rest in Peace!) and Wyatt Case ensured that every guest who hit the stage was legit or legendary. This quality control kept the vibe high and made the club a classic. Soon after dublab’s founding, in the fall of 1999, we were honored to be welcomed into the Root Down on a weekly basis to record every moment of the musical magic. We were especially lucky to be there on June 15, 2000 as The Fantastic Four (Dusk, Cut Chemist, Marvski, Nu-Mark) + One More (DJ Shadow) lit up the place.

This was not long after Cut Chemist & Shadow’s legendary “Brainfreeze” show hit LA and the city was still buzzing. It was also a birthday celebration for Root Down regular, the seminal photographer B+ of Mochilla. Oh yeah, Prince Paul was mingling in the crowd as well. This recording has not been heard for over a decade. It’s a time capsule that’s timeless. You can feel the energy resonating through Dusk’s words on the mic, the crowd’s applause and each fresh jam dropped. Enjoy!

Remember when you went to that haunted house with your parents and at first you hung on so tightly to your mother’s hand that her fingertips turned white? Your fear was a cocoon to keep you safe. After a few loud screams and twisty turns through dark corridors, your silky cocoon was covered by cobwebs. It became a spooky coffin that incubated you into a pale monster child. Soon your mother’s grip loosened out of fear, and you were left howling at the moon as your brethren of the night creep-walked in a graveyard dance macabre. You transformed into a creature of pure doom and only the moon knew the secrets of your sinister shade. It was a song serenading you in echos to seal your transformation. The howls of the haunted house band DVA Damas kept the rhythm to see you through to the dark side. Revisit the buzz of this ghastly cabaret with a listen now. Your mind will recoil into a state of sinister rejuvenation and your dark pulse will deepen. Mommy will surely never hold your hand again.

Split the spectrum into exotic rays and vibrate to the point of ecstatic explosion and you’ve got a slight taste of what a Rainbow Arabia set sounds like. The righteous duo escaped the musical mayhem + beer sud splash know as South x Southwest to take refuge in Austin’s glimmering art & culture hub, Domy Books. dublab & Yowie joined forces with the Domy posse to support their flip on the annual Austin experience dubbed What x What-ever. This was a jam outside of the sticky jams outside.

Within this free spirit freak zone we proudly presented a string of live webcasts. The Rainbow Arabia set was extra special because it happened in the midst of an amazing photo show by Ed & Deanna Templeton. The frames nearly rumbled off the walls but it was all worth it as Rainbow Arabia blazed through a set of songs from their Kompakt Records released album Boys and Diamonds.

When the Soft Moon rises, valleys are flooded with cold light. Static crackles, petals fade to pale and a chill runs deep. The Soft Moon shower us with songs like rain from the sombre sky of a stark city. This is concrete music for human hearts. As the tension builds fissures form. Look within and you’ll fine joy within each dark pulsation. This is division done right.

Jasmin Ruiz Blasco brings his booty bass project, MUKTUK to the dublab airwaves for a live set. After his Muktuk performances Jasmin played a dj set tuned to crack the spectrum open even wider. Jasmin is a frequent contributor to dublab and we’re always excited to share what he has in store.

Chancha Via Circuito stopped by the dublab studio while in Los Angeles. He’s originally from Buenos Aires and is one of the finest examples of the music coming out of the ZZK Records label.

While in the studio we caught up with him on the Buenos Aires music scene and the influence of the Cumbia Villera sound and bands like Damas Gratis on his music.

Have you ever been at the beach surfing killer tubes under majestic Sun rays? Of course you have. You fly over rippling waves while slapping flipper high fives to dolphin bros. You cut and jib and jive and jump and slither across the face of the ocean like a super hero set on smooth motion. You’re the star of the surf but then you awake with sand caking your face and flip flop burn lines. In this situation some lesser dream surfers might regret the lack of reality but you revel in it. Imaginative minds are powerful things and dreams are the essence of adventure. You don’t need a longboard to catch waves. In fact you can set adrift on beachy bliss with the aid of this dublab “sprout session” from Jeans Wilder. He provides the hazy, doo-wop dream pop and you provide the ears. So suit up and let’s surf.

Mia Doi Todd’s newest album Cosmic Ocean Ship, is a classic beauty. It evokes the laid back lushness of the best Bossa Nova while letting its heart of California gold shine brightly. To celebrate her album release and support dublab’s Proton Drive fundraiser Mia visited our studios with her musical collaborators: Gabe Noel (bass), Andres Renteria (percussion) and Molly (barks). This live session is one of the most gorgeous offerings ever broadcast on the dublab airwaves and we’re thrilled to share it with you. Mia’s visions will take your breath away and replace it with an intertwined awe of nature and modernity. This is the essential creative music made by an enlightened artist.

Tearist encompass the rawest elements: metal on metal, flesh on flesh, sweat on sweat, fire on fire. They boil and bang it all to the core. Sparks shower and air is set aflame. You need to ride through it to truly get in deep. Creep down the tunnel with Tearist to find what awaits. When all becomes noise and darkness, your mind plays tricks. Hope sparkles in the void and you sense warmth awaiting but doom grasps and squeezes. As your last breath escapes you regret this brave dive down. Finally, a pinhole of light appears and it seems so close, so you keep whispering, hoping and waiting.

The Ramones first gig in NYC was at CBGB’s and everyone thought it was awful except two arty synth freaks, Martin Rev and Alan Vega of Suicide but the story didn’t stop there. The new pals left the crummy club behind and started sauntering down back alleys to avoid the bullshit of the East Village streets. They talked about their favorite loud sounds and where to score cheap, dark sunglasses. As they cruised past one particularly shaky tenement the Sun disappeared completely behind ten floors of crumbling brick and the alley was lost in eclipse. Little did the dudes know that right in front of them the street fell into a sludgy crevice big enough to swallow a cargo van. They, being rail thin and top heavy with hair, slid straight into the fissure and disappeared for a week. They never spoke about what happened in that hole but they would occasionally mutter strange phrases like, “We sent the future west” or, “This world is vexed.”

Vex Ruffin has emerged from the Chino Hills way out here in California 2011, and though years removed from NYC circa 1974, they seem to have caught a whiff of what was brewing in that underground meeting. Stones Throw has since caught the scent and signed the band. We welcomed them to dublab for their first ever radio session and interview to share some secrets. Listen just beneath the surface, and you’ll hear the rumbling.

Here is a gentleman that has crossed every creative boundary with iconic style, so a daunting task indeed to try and reveal his unique spirit in song, but with much joy in my attempt. Deciding to have this mix be a sort of counter-soundtrack for the installation, as well a meditation on his considerable style. The mountain appears shrouded in slow-swirling fog, and the shout sounds like a hoarse howl at the moon. Gorgeous fingerpicking powers this atmospheric folk. Mountshout gives cause to think twice before wading barefoot in the water. Beneath the beauty lurks a darkness ready to pull you under. Mountshout makes the mystery alluring so why not drift down with her?

Alak ventured down from her home in the Sacremento Valley to dublab for this “sprout session.” Her percussive guitar, soaring vocals and unlikely melodies are ingredients that when blended with her lyrics make songs that dissect painful obsessions in pop form. This is emotionally charged music for those who love exotic sound waves. Put on your headphones and ride the bus on a rainy day with Alak wrapped around you.

Cat 500 occupies an intimate corner of the universe that contains within itself a great vastness. Her “sprout session” is a string of interstellar secrets being whispered in your ear. This space chatter is created when a satellite crosses wires with a synthesizer. Like the tree falling in an empty forest, these sounds are usually silent as dust in a void but thanks to Cat 500′s diligent energy you can hear the buzz and crackle of the great beyond. Tune-in and she’ll re-transmit it to you in dubby verbatim.

This may seem like a strange form for a messenger to take but it was an overwhelmingly effective one. Upon placing Life’s Blood on the turntable the phonograph needle started to make its journey from inside to out. With each rotation the energy of an inventive spirit was unlocked. Pregnant was reaching out to us from his circular vessel and surrounding our beings with fields of high vibrations. Our auras had been intensely magnified with the addition of these sound waves and soon our entire beings were immersed in the electric instant.

After this initial astral-phased listening experience it was our great pleasure to make a personal connection with the gentleman who had enabled our musical epiphany. Pregnant aka Daniel Trudeau ventured from his Sacramento home south to the dublab studio and was kind enough to perform a live set focused on dublab-tuned ears (YOURS YOURS YOURS). We are now thrilled to share this “sprout session” with you and are sure your experience will be one of greatest heights. Stay tuned for a lot more Pregnant coming up soon on dublab.

Gil Scott-Heron was a hugely inspirational figure for the dublab family. Coming across his records was always like finding beacons of light in the dust. His wisdom was incredibly insightful and shone with clarity that dug to the core. Gil has passed from this Earth but left us with so much to continue exploring. He has strewn our world with pearls.

We are happy to share one such gem with you now. In 2001 our friends at Canongate Books presented a concert with Gil in Scotland. Jamie Byng from Canongate was a longtime friend and supporter of Gil. In this recording Gil exudes a sense of comfort from performing in the company of friends. Canongate passed this recording to dublab for an exclusive broadcast in 2001. We’re happy to share it with you again in tribute to Gil. Thanks to Jamie Byng, Peter Collinridge and Canongate Books. Rest in peace Gil.

Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma are originally two guys from Germany. Now they are two guys from Germany that you are reading about right…now! These fellows are full of charm and fun songs. They are quite the busy body multi-taskers. Mouse on Mars can read a book while knitting color coded leg warmers and sing carols while memorizing Sanskrit text. Mouse on Mars have scored films, formed their far out record label called Sonig, worked with folks like Stereolab, remixed your mom, and some other stuff. Listen to this set. It’s raditudical.

dublab welcomed Daiana Feuer curator of the New Los Angeles Folk Festival on dublab’s MONDAY MUSIC MEETING. She filled us on the action happening on August 6th at the Zorthian Ranch and played tunes from some of the featured artists. Enjoy this archive of in-studio sets from Ana Caravelle, Stone Darling and Spindrift, all of who will be performing at the festival. The Divine Chord Gospel Show branches out into gospel influenced cuts and artists that crossed over to performing secular cuts too; so plenty of rarities all played from original vinyl, either on 45 or LP format. Every now and then at dublab our audio files grow a mind of their own. With over 12 years’ worth of amazing audio archives, it gets a little tough to keep all the musical magic straight. Unfortunately, this amazing Sprout Session from our pal John Carpenter got lost in the shuffle, and only recently reappeared in our memory banks – almost a year to the day of the actual session!

Harold Budd holds a hallowed place in our minds. His ambient and avant-garde compositions are expressions of dynamic beauty. Harold’s sonic creations have highly inspired our love of minimalist magic. He has created stunning solo work as well as collaborations with the likes of Brian Eno and the Cocteau Twins. Recently Mr. Budd graced the dublab studio to share insights into his musical journeys of the past, present and future. In this casual conversation with us, Harold touches on: the 1960′s LA jazz scene, abstract painting, renaissance counterpoint, his Army days with Albert Ayler, the early phase of CalArts, the London avant-garde sound circle, a fondness for David Sylvian, minimalizing himself out of a career, beautiful inspirations, solitary creativity, his current sound explorations and much more. As part of our 10th anniversary we organized a “dublab visions” retrospective art exhibition at the Continental Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. In order to take full advantage of the amazing space we organized a few bonus happenings. One of these events was an intimate concert featuring Pharaohs (Ale, Sam Cooper & Michael Martinson), Golden Hits and Matthewdavid. Diego Herrera provided the live visual experience. Dig this archive of Pharaohs getting deep into the zoner zone.

The sweaty Latino soul machine known as Senor Coconut was once the pale and rather serious Uwe Schmidt a creator of sounds and deep concepts. One day this mild-mannered music composer was on his south of the border vacation and laid out in the sun for a few winks. These winks turned to years and upon awaking this gentleman was still pale as can be but had absorbed the Sun’s sultry power and become a Latin music super-rhythm -machine. In 2007 he brought his shakes and rattles to Los Angeles and gave us a taste of his sabor. dublab was there to archive the moment for all to enjoy.

On Thursday, March 24th Villa Aurora, dublab & Goethe-Institut Los Angeles presented…An Evening of Silent Film, Pipe Organ and Dubstep Sounds. The evening was an unprecedented program pairing the sounds of Villa Aurora’s historic pipe organ played by Christoph Bull with cutting edge electronic music composed on the spot by Asura.

The two created a live, improvised score to the following silent films:

A Trip to the Moon, 1902
Alice in Wonderland, 1903
Employees leaving the Lumière Factory 1895
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, 1910

This unique collaboration arose as a result of Villa Aurora resident filmmakers, Lillian Rosa and Julian Neville’s, exploration of the thriving Los Angeles dubstep and beat scene. dublab was thrilled to help produce this salon presented live in front of an intimate audience in the magnificent Villa Aurora estate perched atop the green, ocean side hills of Pacific Palisades.

dublab’s office team connected with our favorite captain of tropical boom, the always amazing Butchy Fuego (Boredoms/Pit er Pat/Na Fuego), to give you a weekly dose of audio elightenment.
