dublab presents the Sounds of Now

“The late 70’s were a bizarre few years. Disco had a good run. Sure it’s arguable that punk rock began in the late 60’s as garage rock, but most folks can agree that in 1977 an eruption and subsequent movement of subversion happened. Funny though, it didn’t take long for the attitudes, energies and instrumentations of punk and disco to collide. Practically simultaneously, starving art-school students, synth nerds and consumer-electronics-hooligans got all bastardizical in their crude bedroom recording studios, experimenting with new takes on the already new sub-sub genres. Also funny, was how quickly this fertile period of experimentation became watered down into the marketable sensation of “new wave”. So hop inside our way-back machine now as we set it for 1980 (though a circuit might short out here or there, momentarily sending us to ’79 or ’81). Possibly the peak of this nexus between post-punk, post-disco and early industrial musics.” – Nanny Cantaloupe
