Coming out of Olde English Spelling Bee (OESB), the label that has brought acts like Autre Ne Veut, Forest Swords, Rangers and Sam Mehran (Formally from Test Icicles), is this song and video from Outer Limits Recordings, called “Julie”

Adding to the predominantly lo-fi sound roster of OESB, Outer Limits presents “Julie” in a home-video style, horror/slap-stick comedy hybrid. Though we may not be able to easily explain this video, we are certainly glad to show it.

“The world of Latin music is intimidating, so much rich history and a complex index of rhythms from Spain to South America. Gradually, i picked up cuts here and there: during a phase of collecting deep funk, on trips to Brasil and Mexico, through to my current fascination with Peru. Carlos Niño is an artist who connects to cosmic channels of love energy. He picks up on the positive vibrations pulsed out by the universe and reflects them through his music. The resulting compositions sound as effortless as the midnight tide but are as immense as the moon itself, which pulls the waves in and out from the shore.  His album AQUARIUSSSSSSS will be released May 17th on Disques-Corde and Porter Records.  This collection is a series of songs recorded with his many meditative music friends.  Here are some words from one of his featured collaborators, Ueno from Tenniscoats…

“The way that Carlos compiles sounds together and processes them is strange and fascinating. My memory of playing guitar with Jesse on one of the songs is like a small fragment, and this album is like a kaleidoscope made up of these countless fragments. When you listen to this album, the concept of individual songs melts away, and you’re absorbed in listening to the whole album as one big piece of music. Every single sound you hear is beautiful and serene, and you can surrender yourself to the gentle flow of the album.”

Pregnant will become a significant part of your sound psyche. His creations are those which you see imprinted upon your eyes after staring into the golden Sun from atop a crystalline mountain range. The grass grows hundreds of feet high from the valleys below and sways around your legs as you reach upwards. Clouds swirl around you like dreams of dragon breath. You reach ever higher, arms outstretched alongside your electric body breathing in the world. The patterns in your visions shift by the moment and within them are a thousand x a thousand luminous signs. At this moment you hear a bell and the chimes sound like rain and the beat begins to shake and the sky rattles down rain to warm your face. This is the new beginning and it’s all you bargained for and more.

Carlos shares some of his favorite record finds from the Amoeba Records bin as part of their video series “What’s in My Bag?” Here’s some background info about Carlos in case you are new to this deeply dedicated music mind.

Carlos Niño is a producer, composer, musician, radio host, DJ, music consultant, writer, and poet, based in his hometown of Los Angeles, California. A prolific artist, Nino has been involved in the production of more than 75 records and has toured with various bands and as a DJ throughout Europe, Japan and the United States. He’s one of the founding DJs of dublab.com, has spun records for Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for five summers, and has been a music programmer on KPFK 90.7FM Los Angeles for 16 years.

Heather McIntosh + Butchy Fuego come together for a live dublab session of cello + mpc. Butchy is one of our favorite percussion champions in the whole wide universe and his friend Heather is an acclaimed cellist who has recently chosen to make LA her home. Enjoy this dublab “sprout session” where-in these new roommates bring you an in-sync sound session exploring “THE STORY OF THE ORIGIN OF ALL THINGS.” See image above for a diagram of this fully encompassing tale.

Heather McIntosh recently moved to Los Angeles from Athens, Georgia. House cellist for the Elephant 6 Collective, she has played with Of Montreal, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Music Tapes, Gerbils, Elf Power, Circulatory System, Apples in Stereo, Great Lakes, and The Ladybug Transistor. She has extended her talents outside of Athens performing with Linda Perhacs, Kevin Ayers of the Soft Machine, Faust, Animal Collective, Cat Power, Superchunk, M Ward, The Clientele, St. Vincent, Azure Ray, Icy Demons, Bright Eyes, Washed Out, Dr. Dog, Gnarls Barkley, and Lil’ Wayne.

Her folk/experimental band The Instruments has released three albums. Billions of Phonographs, Cast a Half Shadow, and Dark Småland are all available on Orange Twin Records.

She is also a co-founder and artistic director of AUX, an event and publication series devoted to experimental art in all forms. Based in Athens, Georgia, AUX has showcased the works of Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone, Faust, Korena Pang, Robert Schneider, The Black Swan Network, Michael Columbia, The Olivia Tremor Control, Pelican City, and Melted Men.

She most recently composed the score for the film Compliance, directed by Craig Zobel, which received a Sundance Cinereach Post-Production feature film grant.

Butchy Fuego is a producer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, recording engineer and visual artist. He has played all over the world with acts such as Boredoms, M.I.A., Pit Er Pat, Nite Jewel, Linda Perhacs, Rainbow Arabia, Aska Matsumiya, Matteah Baim, Hisham Bharoocha, NA FUEGO, Zach Hill, Lucky Dragons, in addition to performing solo and in numerous improvisational settings. In the studio, he’s worked with Red Krayola, Lou Barlow, The Congos, Pit Er Pat, Abe Vigoda, Aska Matsumiya, Soft Circle, Hecuba, These Are Powers, Rainbow Arabia, and countless others.

“You might be wondering how I filtered out the fuzz and narrowed down all the incredible releases I came across in 2011 into a succint three hour block. Well I guess the answer is a mystery to us both. I was quite daunted by the task because there were so many great tunes offered up by creative music makers this year. I was putting off the mission day after day after day, afraid the task would drag on into the next decade. To my great amazement the universe smiled on me because I awoke this morning with a scroll tucked tightly into my belt. Emblazoned in pure light on this parchment were the following songs. These are indeed some of my favorite tunes of the year so I guess fate has a way of working it all out.” – frosty

“Leaving on a holiday to Ethiopia was a dream come true. I became interested in the country through its music and needed to go there. Traveling in Ethiopia was not the easiest thing, but seeing the landscapes, talking with the people and hearing their music made it an essential trip. Armed with a Zoom recorder i started my journey in Addis Ababa, went South to the Tribes and flew North to see the historical sites. All Ethiopians are music lovers and also very proud about their sounds, composers and (musical) history. I recorded people chanting in churches, women singing and dancing to music in buses, bands playing in bars, etc…and mixed those with some other recordings I purchased and blended into a mix for just you.” – Tommy D

Geddes Gengras collaborating with The Congos, one of the most ultimate Jamaican bands to ever harmonize their energies with cosmic chants to Jah. The album, ICON GIVE THANK, will be accompanied by a feature length film, ICON EYE, which documents the recording and meeting of minds in the Congos home of St. Catherine, Jamaica. This mix was made with LPs found between Chile and Mexico in a manner to pay hommage to Roberto Bolaño’s literature for the infrarealist newspaper “Estrella Cercana” (Close Star) which was part of the exhibition of the same name held during the Autumn of 2011 in Mexico City’s Kurimanzutto Gallery. It is also an hommage to Chilean psychedelic music and to the Chileans who, like Bolaño, lived, wandered and fantasized in the Mexico of the seventies. This mix is dedicated to the memory of Monna Bell.

The dublab & Stones Throw families have lit candles and mingled to make a baby in the form of the “Sounds of Symmetry 7 inch Volume 1.”  This is your opportunity to hear what happens when these two creative organizations get together to procreate.  The first round of next generation sound gems come courtesy of Stones Throw stalwart James Pants and dublab dandy Daedelus.

For his role, James Pants tugs his tuxedo t-shirt on tightly to man the microphone as a cruise ship sinks into the deep sea. Once below the crew and passengers are treated to a million refracted stars shimmering above the sea surface while ocean floor lovers twirl their tentacles with gasps and moans to this remixed version of Daedelus’ “An Armada Approaches.”

The cover art for this creation was designed/silk-screened by Diego Herrera and the center label was made by Brandy Flower (HIT+RUN). We hope you enjoy this first installment of the “Sounds of Symmetry” series from your friends in forward thinking sound at dublab & Stones Throw.

This video is by far one of my very favorite dublab finds. According to some totally legitimate YouTube comments, this is one of the first Italo songs played live on TV (not-synced). Regardless of the truth to that, everything is so right about this video – it makes the memories of the 80s seem like some out-of-reach Utopia. I can only dream about being in this crowd… Caught within those wonderfully-psychedelic camera transitions; hypnotized by Ms. Moses’ heartbreaking gaze.

After hearing this track on Daedelus’ most-wonderful Happily Ever After mix, I sought out every video, remix and piece of vinyl that contained this incredible track. It doesn’t appear that much more magic came from this dynamic Italo-Disco duo, along with their Revolution Records label… A handful of reissues in Benelux, and a few similar videos across YouTube. Fortunately, I think this track will be around forever – another timeless gem to graze dublab’s fingertips.

Germany’s outer plane focused rhythm genius Burnt Friedman is back with a new album, “Bokoboko,” to be released February 3rd on Nonplace. This collection sees Burnt continuing his explorations into sound spaces created with open-ended intentions in mind. His adventurous approach ensures the music remains as light as air floating in limbo. The song we offer you today is a perfect example of the genre blur Burnt so brilliantly brings into being.

We are celebrating the first mid-week moment of 2012 by presenting you this “Wednesday Tone Poem” from Turn On The Sunlight. The duo of Carlos Niño & Jesse Peterson have been creating lush, impressionistic compositions for several years and now, the two have brought an extended family of friends into the fold to create a collection of songs recently released as “Remixes / Collaborations” by our favorite Japanese label Disques-Corde. The song we offer you today, “Wednesday Tone Poem,” features Koen Holtkamp of dublab’s favorite ambient duo Mountains. We hope this gorgeous music makes your Wednesday a wonderful one.

Our dear friend Marcus Fischer runs his life on a different calendar than most folks. He doesn’t sit on his hands waiting for inspiration to strike. He ensures this sort of energy is part of his every breath so that he stays swift as an arrow flying forward with ideas buzzing from his head into crystal clear being. Non Projects joined dublab in our carefully crafted cove of progressive musical exploration in the midst of Austin’s annual South x Southwest chaos fest. Our energies emerged in the form of the “What x What-ever” live transmissions broadcast from within the haven of creative light called Domy Books. During their visit Anenon and Gold & Soil (Asura + Ana Caravelle) brought lovely moments to light and reached beyond the immediate surroundings to share a bit of beauty with the wide world.
