EREMITE RECORDS PRESENTS
JOSHUA ABRAMS NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY & JEFF PARKER (SOLO)
WED · FEBRUARY 7, 2018
8:00 pm (event ends at 1:00 am)
Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society
In 2010, Joshua Abrams formed the project Natural Information Society around his interests in the guimbri, a three-string animal hide instrument played in “healing ceremonies” by the Gnawa of North Africa. Natural Information Society uses traditional & conventional instrumentation to create long-form psychedelic environments that join the hypnotic qualities of the guimbri to a wide range of contemporary musics & methodologies including jazz, minimalism & krautrock. The band’s fourth album for eremite records, Magnetoception, was selected by The Wire magazine as the #3 recording of 2015, & by Pitchfork as the #2 Experimental record of 2015. In 2017 the band released its fifth eremite album, Simultonality, to continued great critical acclaim. In 2015, Natural Information Society & Bitchin Bajas released the collaborative album Automaginary for Drag City Records.
Joshua Abrams developed his voice in the rich ferment of the 1990’s Chicago music world, participating heavily across the city’s jazz, experimental & rock scenes. He co-founded the ‘back-porch minimalist’ band Town & Country, & with Matana Roberts & Chad Taylor, the jazz trio Sticks & Stones. In a very busy two decades Abrams recorded & toured with a remarkable range of artists that included extended engagements with Fred Anderson, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Hamid Drake, Jeff Parker, Theaster Gates, Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts & The Roots. Abrams appears on over one hundred recordings. A film composer, Abrams has scored the music for five feature length films including the award-winning Life Itself & The Trials of Muhammad Ali.
For this concert, Natural Information Society is Abrams, guimbri & double bass; Lisa Alvarado, harmonium & percussion; Mikel Avery, drums & percussion; Ben Boye, electric auto-harp, Rhodes & Wurlitzer keyboards; Emmett Kelly, electric guitar. This is the band’s first Los Angeles concert since 2012.
Jeff Parker (Solo)
Jeff Parker (b. Bridgeport, Connecticut USA, 4/4/67) is recognized as one of contemporary music’s most versatile and innovative electric guitarists and composers. With a prolific output characterized by musical ideas of angularity and logic, he works in a wide variety of mediums – from pop, rock and jazz to new music – using ideas informed by innovations and trends in both popular and experimental forms. He creates works that explore and exploit the contrary relationships between tradition and technology, improvisation and composition, and the familiar and the abstract. His sonic palette may employ techniques from sample-based technologies, analog and digital synthesis, and conventional and extended techniques from over 40 years of playing the guitar.
He is a longtime member of the influential indie band Tortoise, and also a founding member of the critically acclaimed and innovative groups Isotope 217˚ and Chicago Underground, and has been an associate member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1995. As a sideman and collaborator, he has appeared on over 140 commercial recordings. Currently, he has been focusing on music production, small ensembles and solo performance – to cultivate and establish an idiosyncratic relationship between electronic and acoustic compositional properties in music.
