Ale w/guests Susan Silton & Vicki Ray- Elevation Through Sound: Quartet For the End of Time
Wednesday, April 25 2018
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
In June, 2017 the Los Angeles based interdisciplinary artist, Susan Silton, presented a staging of French composer Olivier Messiaen’s iconic work, Quartet for the End of Time in an empty warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. The work, commissioned by arts organization LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division), brought together an all-female cohort of four musicians (Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, Michiko Ogawa, Vicki Ray, Shalini Vijayan) and four dancers (Deborah Cohen, Norianna Galindo-Ramirez, Kianna Peppers, Flora Wiegmann), along with actor Cristina Frias.
In 1939, at the onset of WWII, Messiaen was drafted into the French Army, and was eventually captured and imprisoned as a POW in Stalag VIII A, at Görlitz, Germany. It was here, on January 15, 1941, in the camp’s theater barrack and amidst bitter cold, that Messiaen’s composition, Quartet for the End of Time (Quatour pour la fin du Temps), first premiered to an audience of prisoners and German prison guards.
This program will feature a conversation with Susan Silton and Vicki Ray followed by a recording of the live performance.
