02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
I spin at clubs, lounges, parties + on radio. From ’97 to ’05, I spent up to twelve hours a day pursuing obscure funk music, traveling to Brasil, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ghana, France, the UK, Mexico and Canada digging for records. I’m from the LBC, but professionally began in London in the ’70s: first as a staff writer on the NME music weekly, followed by a few years at Island Records. I worked with BOB MARLEY, BURNING SPEAR, TOOTS & THE MAYTALS, JIMMY CLIFF and produced the HEPTONES album “Night Food.” I moved back to L.A. after five years in London and went back with Island, eventually lasting 23 years. I produced THE PLIMSOULS, signed SUBLIME, put together 22 soundtrack albums, etc. I recently returned to music journalism and I’m the music supervisor on a Marley feature film, doing consulting work for iTunes and still producing music. I’m also still digging and share the wax by spinning out or creating mixes for DUBLAB.COM.
This Wednesday: MATT ROBINSON & MARIO C join me for a special edition of Heads Up radio. The three of us have been friends since the 80s. We also each got bitten by the reggae bug. So this show brings us together playing the Jamaican tunes we love the most. MATT took Of in the 80s with the FUNKY REGGAE night + soon had a label with Island, then he became the head of Black Music at Capitol Records. Mario C emerged at the start of Delicious Vinyl’s run, started working with the Beastie Boys as producer and engineer on every lp from Paul’s Boutique to Hello Nasty. He built the Beasties studio too, got a Grammy for a Brazilian recording with Sly & Robbie on it. It’s also Dublab’s fund drive, so listen live on Wednesday or to the archive which will be up by Friday…but please find the time to donate to dublab.
