Raymond Scott (1908-1994) was a composer, bandleader, engineer and electronic music pioneer whose creative and technical contributions helped shape American culture. Most people have heard his music—but many have never heard his name.

On September 8th, an array of musicians, historians, animators, engineers and filmmakers will tell the story of Scott’s music and machines at ScottWorks | The Raymond Scott Festival.

Yann Novak is a multidisciplinary artist, composer, and curator based in Los Angeles. His work is guided by his interests in perception, context, movement, and the felt presence of direct experience. Through the use of sound and light, Novak explores how these intangible materials can act as catalysts to focus our awareness on our present location in space and time. Novak’s diverse body of works—audiovisual installations, performances, architectural interventions, sound diffusions, recording, and prints—ask participants to reclaim the present moment as a political act.

Novak’s work has been experienced through exhibitions and performance at AB Salon, Brussels; The Broad, Los Angeles; Commonwealth & Council, Los Angeles; Danspace, New York; de Young Museum, San Francisco; Fylkingen, Stockholm; Getty Villa, Pacific Palisades, California; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; Human Resources, Los Angeles; Iklectik, London; LACMA, Los Angeles; Mutek Festival, Montreal; SFMoMA, San Francisco; Soundfjord, London; Spektrum, Berlin; and The Stone, New York, among others. His recorded sound works have been released by 901 Editions, Berlin; Dragon’s Eye Recordings, Los Angeles; Hibernate, Leeds; LINE Imprint, Los Angeles; and Touch, London, among others.

For his latest work Novak drew inspiration from his upbringing in the midwestern US—minutes from rural farmland—as a queer youth. Performances of Masculinity ruminates on toxic masculinity, its influence on human development, and its broader presence in experimental music communities.
