CALLIE w/guest Safe Jazz- CUTS 01
CUTS 01 / a melting pot of dark wave electronic, footwork, bounce, hip hop, jazz and textured instrumentals all linked together by a cacophony of samples which have been cut, chopped, and screwed from vinyls excavated from the depths of dollar bins around Los Angeles and beyond.
“Safe Jazz is the creative project of Minneapolis raised, Los Angeles based bassist, producer, and composer, Jesse Schuster.
Inspired by the West Coast beat scene, Safe Jazz is an exploration of sample collage; repurposing scraps of jazz vinyls, youtube detritus, home videos and found sound to the angular rhythms of glitch and spazz backbeat.
For his debut album, Schuster turned to longtime friends and collaborators, Eric Mayson on keys and Arlen Peiffer on drum kit, to add dimension to his collage sketches. Together the trio recorded a marathon of performances outlining 22 songs in 3 days at Red Gate in Los Angeles. Schuster approached those subsequent recordings as further fodder, cutting and stretching, sampling and recycling, abstracting from the performances their energy, spontaneity, and spirit of collaboration.
From this process Safe Jazz’s ‘Joy,etc.’ is born; colorful and unabashed. Joy,etc. is an outsider’s grateful contribution to the canon of the LA beat scene.”
