  • 8:00am – 9:00am Alain Mabanckou – Interview w/ Samuel Lamontagne

     

    Widely known as a poet and a writer Alain Mabanckou is also a music producer. He produced two albums of the band Black Bazar that were released on the world music label Lusafrica. For this session he meets with Samuel Lamontagne to talk about Congolese music, mainly about the Congolese Rumba, Soukous and Ndombolo genres. They also talk about the relation between music and poetry and the new generation of Congolese musicians in France.

    Samuel Lamontagne is a French-Caribbean author. While getting a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at UCLA, his researches focus on musical cultures and histories of the city of Los Angeles.

His productions are heard on dance floors all over the globe in the most respected clubs and online broadcasts. Cole’s music is a sure favorite amongst noted underground dj’s such as Dj Harvey, Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Mark E, Juan Maclean, RubNTug, Alex From Tokyo, Foolish Felix, Ooft, and Rob Mellow, just to name a few heavy hitters. Owner of House Arrest, this unique label offers past and present releases still heavy in demand. Fromthe instant house-classic “Buffalo Bill” to a more recent sold out Bee Gees remix on American Standard, Cole continues to deliver a sultry-edgy beat. There’s no mystery as to why Cole receives strong support from dj peers and why his releases do so well…Working on his craft non-stop and forming relationships abroad, all the while remaining humble and open-minded. Cole Medina is guaranteed a successful future as he branches on his new label Licorice Delight as well as distinguished labels around the world.

    Long Wave: suspending time and immersing the listener in a widescreen of sound

    Gabie Strong is a California artist and musician exploring spatial constructions of degeneration, drone and decay as a means to improvise new arrangements of self-reflexive meaning. Strong uses sound performance, radio broadcasting, environmental installation, photography and video as a mediums for experimentation. Current themes in her work address the use of ritual acts and fetish collecting to expose constructions of feminine being.
