Tradition and Transition is a six part radio program series exploring the voices of a new Israel. In each episode, your host, Alejandro Cohen and co-host Chris Kissel will explore the creative process, and the path of Israeli artists in discovering and finding their identity in a nation that is young yet holds ancient traditions as part of its heritage.

On this episode we explore the Hoodna Bar. Located in the southern Tel Aviv neighborhood of Florentin, the Hoodna bar is the headquarters of the 14-member Hoodna Orchestra. Formed in 2012, Hoodna Orchestra presents a melding of African jazz and funk styles, in part influenced by Tel Aviv’s rich ethnic makeup. We spoke to Rani Birenbaum, owner of Hoodna and percussionist in the Hoodna Orchestra, about Tel Aviv’s diversity and the path that led his band to their global sound.

“I’ve been missing the ‘party in a box’ feel of mix shows that used to exist 20 and 30 years ago like NYCs Red Alert show or the LA and Bay Area’s Wake Up Show. This is my chance to bring it back and share all the great music and talent I’ve run across over the years.”
