Non Projects joined dublab in our carefully crafted cove of progressive musical exploration in the midst of Austin’s annual South x Southwest chaos fest. Our energies emerged in the form of the “What x What-ever” live transmissions broadcast from within the haven of creative light called Domy Books. During their visit Anenon and Gold & Soil (Asura + Ana Caravelle) brought lovely moments to light and reached beyond the immediate surroundings to share a bit of beauty with the wide world.

Wanna take a shopping spree through the stellar lands of inner vision? Just step through the door of the triangle shaped shop called Music Prism. Let her helpful associates guide you through a personalized experience of essential browsing that will get your mind in sync with the stars. There is a dome ringing up above and it is the universe calling your name. Answer with any number of custom crafted galaxy horns that may be awaiting your lips on the shelves of your new favorite shop. To give you a hint of the sounds that may emanate from the aforementioned horns upon their blowing, the Music Prism staff have assembled an assorted sampling of possibly available tones. This episode of dublab’s “Monday Music Meeting” features a special guest set and interview with Non Projects artist and founder Anenon broadcast as he was preparing to head to the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid this November. Brian shared his anticipations of the experience and how it would impact his artistic trajectory. He then shared an depth dj mix of the sounds that influence him.

After all the gum swapped in this hot and heavy, long running legacy of merged passion it’s incredible that the possibilities of the blend are still endless. The seven inch record format is the decades long mainstay of punk rock, noise, and indie music because most folks interested in filling the world with these sounds is broke. The relatively low cost of pressing seven inches makes it an ideal way to crystallize explosive tones. Thankfully the resulting records often arise with inspired hand made covers full of glue, grit, imperfect ink and collaged craziness.

If you’ve pined to see a wide survey of the best 7″ embodied mayhem that has been unleashed upon the world over the past few decades you’re in luck. Brian Roettinger, Mike Treff, and Diego Hadis have compiled 300 creative designs into a book called Touchable Sound available now via Sound Screen Design. To celebrate the release of Touchable Sound, Brian graced the dublab studio to share some of the music behind the images. He is not only an incredible designer, grammy-nominated for his packaging of No Age’s album “Nouns” but also a musician and die-hard fan of obscure vinyl releases. What happens when you have a record shop full of heat? It attracts fiends like a flame and quickly becomes a home for heads devoted to searching for the beats far beyond the “perfect” ones everyone else is looking for. Since Scott Craig opened his cozy Records L.A. shop deep in the West Adams district of Los Angeles he’s casually lured a loyal clientele of vinyl freaks who rub elbows and sip on beer while flipping through the well stocked bins. For dublab’s “Sounds of Symmetry” Proton Drive fundraiser Scott gathered a posse of his shop regulars to share a sampling of the Records L.A. rare wax wavelength. On April 23, 2011 our friends from Cinefamily and Cinespia presented a cinematic field trip to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. This happening was centered around the L.A. premiere of Werner Herzog’s 3-D documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” which screened inside the museum’s North American Mammal Hall.

In addition to the film, the entire museum was turned into a space for sonic exploration. dublab had the honor to present performances in the wondrous NHM Gem & Mineral Hall. As the precious stones glimmered around us, Matthewdavid, M. Geddes Gengras, frosty and Katie Byron shared sounds. Also, on hand was Turquoise Wisdom, a DJ perfectly suited to such a luminous atmosphere. His selections flowed vividly across the spectrums of reflected light. The Parisian posse La Femme turned us onto their synthy-surf-sounds through the Le Podium #1 EP. When we discovered they were planning an extended rampage through our coastal lands we invited them in for a live dublab “sprout session.” The resulting bouncy jams sound like a wave of shaking hips crashing down to a dance-floor that never stops spinning. As La Femme whipped up a whirlpool of frenzied fun Alex Pelly and her film companions from the Masses were on hand to capture the studio scenes using compact Digital Harinezumi cameras. In April we found ourselves under the big blue sky of Marfa, Texas. This tiny west Texas town of 2000 residents happens to be a vibrant hub of minimalist art and if you’re lucky and look at the sky in just the right way, mystical lights. We were welcomed into the warm environs of the top notch Marfa Book Company for a live broadcast featuring our friends Nicolas Miller, Daniel Chamberlain, Little Danny and David Hollander alongside dublab’s frosty, Lavenders and Matthewdavid with live visuals by Alex Pelly. “Poppy Sol Dose: Vuelo Pan Am is the second collection of songs from Latin America and Spain with a very soulful, pop sound that’s irresistible to smiles and hips. Chart topping hits meet obscure rarities for the 2nd time to add to your endless summer.

Born out of a love for dusty vinyl, the 1st Poppy Sol was recorded in the Summer of 2007 and only 50 hand numbered and hand cut covers were made to gift to friends. One day, while showering, Frosty had the epiphany that it should be re-released with artwork and became part of the Future Roots series. With beautiful artwork by Ganas and dedicated to my parents, it found its way around the world and into your hands and hearts.

By popular demand, a 2nd volume came to be inspired by so many new gems that had to be shared and helped promote a Sunday night weekly I did called Pan Am at Chavito Bar in Silverlake. This time, 100 hand numbered and hand cut covers were made. Cut outs of pictures from National Geographic depicting the daily lives of Latin Americans accompany each CD. If you crack open a dusty dictionary and flip through inches of pages to the word “composed” you will not find a picture of Anenon sketched next to the definition but, if you listen to his music and dwell on his personal mission of cultured sound dissemination you will be hard pressed to disassociate the artist and this word. Brian Simon, the young man behind Anenon and the collective / record label Non Projects always carries a poised air. Remember that kid in science class with the cool patterned sweater that had strands of yarn coming loose at the cuffs from hours spent earnestly drawing the flowers of exotic plants discovered on the yellowing pages of overdue library books? It was this same kid who after school would skip the typical hours of television in favor of deep walks into nature. His lunch was trail mix and mix tapes, not candy bars and candy coated conversation. He wasn’t a social misfit and he wasn’t a loner. He was quiet and thoughtful and cultured. We’re not saying this kid is Asura but it is the kind of person who would naturally connect with Ryan York’s highly textured, beautiful tones. Asura makes music for kind hearts and bright minds. When you’re gliding high above the clouds looking out your cockpit window, the world seems so calm. The fluffiness of the clouds distracts you from the flames tickling your tail. The cottony white against the brightest blue is a combination that surfaces floods of feeling. Your eyes would typically tear up; thinking of bygone Indian Summers, floating in the lake on your back, swooping up on the swingset as your stomach falls. You would cry a bit, but the smoke has filled your cockpit. You would cry a bit, but your gliding is done. Your velocity is smashing and the next thing you know you’re onto the unknown.

Speculator sees all this and more. He watches and reflects through his sound. That buzz in your ear is his eavesdropping presence, thick and beautiful. The Root Down holds a place of high legend in the history of the Los Angeles underground music community. Every Thursday night for over a decade the Root Down gathered LA’s soul/funk/hip-hop/roots/latin music lovers under one roof to dance and socialize. For six of those years the roof over The Root Down was a spot called Gabah. It was an unassuming joint on Melrose Avenue in East Hollywood. The biggest action in the neighborhood was usually the constant flow of cars on and off the freeway ramps. What those car didn’t know, as they whizzed past in their bubbles, was that another bubble was vibrating nearby.

The Root Down was a community cocoon. A fresh zone of soulful, forward thinkers who gave respect due to the pioneers of the past while creatively chopping their way into the future. The Root Down braintrust: Loslito, Miles Tackett, Dusk (Rest in Peace!) and Wyatt Case ensured that every guest who hit the stage was legit or legendary. This quality control kept the vibe high and made the club a classic. Soon after dublab’s founding, in the fall of 1999, we were honored to be welcomed into the Root Down on a weekly basis to record every moment of the musical magic. We were especially lucky to be there on June 15, 2000 as The Fantastic Four (Dusk, Cut Chemist, Marvski, Nu-Mark) + One More (DJ Shadow) lit up the place.

This was not long after Cut Chemist & Shadow’s legendary “Brainfreeze” show hit LA and the city was still buzzing. It was also a birthday celebration for Root Down regular, the seminal photographer B+ of Mochilla. Oh yeah, Prince Paul was mingling in the crowd as well. This recording has not been heard for over a decade. It’s a time capsule that’s timeless. You can feel the energy resonating through Dusk’s words on the mic, the crowd’s applause and each fresh jam dropped. Enjoy!

Remember when you went to that haunted house with your parents and at first you hung on so tightly to your mother’s hand that her fingertips turned white? Your fear was a cocoon to keep you safe. After a few loud screams and twisty turns through dark corridors, your silky cocoon was covered by cobwebs. It became a spooky coffin that incubated you into a pale monster child. Soon your mother’s grip loosened out of fear, and you were left howling at the moon as your brethren of the night creep-walked in a graveyard dance macabre. You transformed into a creature of pure doom and only the moon knew the secrets of your sinister shade. It was a song serenading you in echos to seal your transformation. The howls of the haunted house band DVA Damas kept the rhythm to see you through to the dark side. Revisit the buzz of this ghastly cabaret with a listen now. Your mind will recoil into a state of sinister rejuvenation and your dark pulse will deepen. Mommy will surely never hold your hand again.
