FROSTY & TURQUOISE WISDOM – “TIMELESS GEMS WORTH SPREADING” – A TEDACTIVE 2010 ENTRY MIX
TED is a small non profit devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.
On TED.com, the best talks and performances from TED are available to the world, for free. More than 500 TEDTalks are now online, with more added each week. All of the talks feature closed captions in English, and many feature subtitles in various languages. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and re-posted.
In 2010, a spectacular group of people will converge on Palm Springs, California, to experience a live simulcast of TED in an intimate, full immersion setting. TEDActive blends the allure of the future with the mystique of a desert oasis, complete with live music, bonus speakers, and highly inspired makers/doers.
dublab djs frosty and Turquoise Wisdom were invited to enhance the experience with dj sets and musical experiments. As a primer to TEDActive they created a special “Timeless Gems Worth Spreading” mix to turn-on participants and the universe with rare sound gems from the dublab collective. Enjoy!

FOL CHEN – Live “Sprout Session” (02.26.09)
When the mysterious and intentionally obscure Fol Chen materialized in the dublab studio and left behind nearly twenty minutes of skewed pop perfection, we didn’t ask any questions. We just sat back and reveled in the happy-making melodies, skewed lyrics, and supremely danceable songs that helped this band cruise onto the roster of Asthmatic Kitty and delight all those they’ve come into contact with. After our initial mesmerized moments, we devised an elaborate plan to capture the elusive Fol Chen in action. However, when we flashed our nets they were already gone. At least we’re left with these wonderful sound memories.

SILK FLOWERS – Live “Sprout Session” (02.26.09)
These Silk Flowers, hand delivered from New York City, grow on you. You might as well just put this live session on repeat, because silky seeds are being sowed in your brain as soon as you push play. Several listens later, the odd and enigmatic shades of gray which first confronted you bloom into a prismatic synth world populated by kaleidoscopic colors, unique song structures, and haunting, strangely poignant vocals. Remember — although not of the natural world, life-like Silk Flowers never die.

He gladly allowed us to pick his brain for some wisdom and inspiration, and shared some awesome stories of the old school Avant Garde. I was lucky and honoured to be invited by the people at Cassette NYC to come and do a little set at the beginning of their regular night. It was the perfect occasion to play a bunch of stuff by people I know, who I think are dope and deserve to be heard, especially on a decent system.
The tracks are a mix of material already out, forthcoming releases and a couple of exclusive remixes. I just wanted to make people dance and give them a chance to hear some stuff they might not generally hear as this kind of music doesn’t always get played out.

Tuck yourself in, relax, and lull yourself into the disarming dream world of one-man-band Bobb Bruno, who can be found participating in and producing some of L.A.’s most currently mystical and mysterious bands (Pocahaunted, Best Coast). This bunny-suit-wearing machine maestro stopped by dublab to serve up a veritable smorgasbord of far-out dream sounds for your mind to feast on. From cold electronic drones to warm and majestic guitar washes, twinkly xylophone sonatas and sentimental dreamscapes to outer-space shred sessions, Bobb brought much beauty–tinged with a healthy dose of darkness.
